“TICK TOCK SAYS THE CLOCK. Time’s up, mother …”
He says the words.
He pulls the trigger.
Te bullet punches Harold Roseman, M.D. against the seatback. Aer a
moment, his shoulders slump, but he remains seated behind his desk, head
back, eyes open.

He lowers the gun to his side, watches the crimson stain spread like ink
across the drug doctor’s white pinpoint oxford.
He turns and leaves.
From beneath the desk, a gagging sound. A muffled cry.
CHAPTER TWO
REMI BONE STEERS HIS F-150 onto the wide driveway and sees Kayla waiting
for him on the steps of the high school. She shoots him the big smile that
melts his heart every time. He watches her rise from the steps, tall with long
legs, though strong, not like a pelican anymore, the pre-teen gawky stage
well behind her now that she’s seventeen.
“You’re ve minutes late,” she says in the same mildly scolding tone her
mother, his wife, had used on him when she wasn’t really mad, just
pretending to be, but making a point because it had to be made.
“All the time in the world, at your age, and yet so impatient,” he says.
“I’m starving. Let’s go to the diner.”
Ten minutes later, Remi pulls the truck off Baltimore Avenue into the
parking lot, the huge neon sign announcing, “Empire Diner.”
They ask for a booth, Remi out of breath by the time they reach it.
“You have to start working out,” Kayla says.
“Working out.” He rolls his eyes.
“Seriously. You’re thin but you have no muscles. You look like Billy Bob
Thornton, on that Goliath show on Amazon. And you’re always huffing and
puffing. You need some serious cardio. You should join a gym.”
“I’d be too busy staring at women’s behinds to get anything done.”
“And that’s another thing. You really need to start dating. Find yourself a
girlfriend.”
“Here we go.”
“It’s been more than four years since Mom’s passed. It’s time, Remi.”
Calling him by name, instead of dad or pop, like she has since the rst time
they met, eleven years before.
He sighs.
“I’m going to put you onto one of those computer dating sites. How
about match.com. Or, what’s that one for old people? OurTime.com.”
“Out of time.com.”
“You’re impossible. You know that?”
“What your mother always said.”
They order and eat, him with his giant, dirty-nailed mechanic’s hands,
her with her long teenage ngers. Father and daughter. Making small talk
about their days. Trading snide comments. Her pulling out her cellphone
every two minutes and him telling her to put it away.
“Any word yet?” he asks, no need to be more specic because she knows
what he’s talking about. College applications. ey’ve both been on pins and
needles for weeks.
Kayla shakes her head, stuffs the rest of her burger into her mouth.
Remi watches her chew. “I don’t know how you stay so thin, the way you
eat.”
“It’s called exercise. You may remember that concept from earlier in our
conversation.”
“And a hundred conversations before that.”
“Don’t get smart with me, Remi Bone.”
Remi smiles. Another thing her mother always said.
