“I can’t believe I wasted five years of my life on you!” I screamed,
slamming the bedroom door behind me so Brad couldn’t follow me
into our bedroom. We’d been living in this apartment since we
graduated college four years ago. It was slightly out of our price
range when we first bought it, but we made it work until we were a
lile more financially comfortable. For the last year, we’d been
saving furiously for a house, but real estate in Seale just kept
geing more and more expensive.

Tonight, our argument had been sparked by him making yet
another comment about not being in a rush to move any part of our
lives forward. The house, marriage, kids—apparently all of that was
still in our distant future in his mind.
Tears flowed freely down my cheeks as I pulled out my suitcase
and started throwing things in. I had no real plan, but I needed to
get out of there. I’d spent the last hour fighting, screaming, and
crying while Brad looked at me like I was a lunatic. I really thought
we were on the same page about our future. Or adjacent pages, at

when I got to… wherever I ended up. The money I’d set aside for our
dream house was just siing there, begging to be spent on a new
wardrobe.
Before walking out of the bedroom, I took a minute to compose
myself. No way was I walking out of that apartment without my
dignity—what was left of it, anyway. I took one more deep breath
and then I pulled open the door. Brad was leaning against the
opposite wall, and he straightened when he saw my bag.
“Erin, what’s the big deal?” He ran his hand through his sandyblonde hair, and his brown eyes almost looked like he might be hurting at the idea of losing me.
My rage skyrocketed again, and I waved goodbye to my last
shred of dignity as it flew out the window. “What’s the big deal?
Really, Brad? The big deal is we’ve been together for five fucking
years, and you apparently haven’t been honest with me about where
you see our relationship going and when you see it going there.
We’ve talked countless times about saving for a house. About geing
married and moving to the suburbs so we can raise our kids
somewhere with a yard, where it’s safe for them to ride their bikes.
Did you mean any of it?” I had to know. Even if it made the whole
situation worse, I just… I had to know.
“Of course I meant it. But I don’t see what the rush is. We’re only
