Cyrus took Enzo.
I couldn’t breathe. Nothing usually went my way for long, but the light
had been visible at the end of the tunnel. Foolish of me to hope. I dug my
fingers into Tanner’s biceps, tearing his shirtsleeves.
How could Rita betray me? How long had I been so blind? Disdain had
marred the slope of her eyebrow in a way it never had before. As if I were
no better than the dirt under her shoe. I stiffened my weak knees, but try as I
might, the tremble of my hands wouldn’t stop.

“She can’t get away with this,” I gasped.
Tanner flexed his arms around my waist. “Breathe Maya,” he ordered.
I tried, but the burn in my throat made it difficult. No, this couldn’t be
it. She’d strolled out of the viewing room facing the fighting arena like she
hadn’t rocked my foundation. How dare she.
I wiggled out from his grip, my breaths bouncing off the walls.
“Maya,” Tanner murmured.
“No,” I hissed. Crossing the viewing room threshold—a place loaded
with memories of Enzo—I dashed down the hall. The maze of hallways
shot off in various directions, but I followed the clicks of her fucking heels.
Classic Rita. Walking away without a care . . . like she’d won. Her kneelength bubblegum dress suit blared at me from the end of the hall.
Her, Head Mistress? It had to be a joke.
Her unbothered gait stuttered, but I didn’t give her the opportunity to
turn. Yanking her shoulder so she faced me, I slammed my palm into her
neck, pinning her against the wall.
She wheezed until my grip tightened, and she couldn’t make a noise.
Her nails raked thin lines against my wrist.
A light bulb buzzed overhead.
“Tell me where he is,” I choked out. I’d grown up with her being the
one person I would do anything for, and we ended up here?
Her lips quivered, but I refused to loosen my grip to allow her to speak.
Why had she done this? Tears blurred my vision, and a high-pitched ring
broke through the deafening roar of my labored breaths.
Her hand disappeared, but I didn’t take my attention off her flitting
eyes. We shared features from our mother. Tan skin, round face, and
naturally dark hair—until she dyed it. For so long, we’d only had each
other.
She waved the ringing phone in my face, and a name flashed across the
screen . . . Cyrus. Using every ounce of strength, I removed one finger at a
time, exposing halfmoon nail gashes. Blood dotted the marks.
Rita fell to the ground and coughed, her shoulders shaking with each
burst. Her nostrils flared as she sucked in breaths. Thud. The ringing phone
slipped from her shaking hands, and she scrambled to grab it.
“I’ll call you back. I arrived at Moretti Academy.” Her voice came out
abused and rough. She hung up the phone and slipped the device into her
bra. “You’re a monster.”
I jerked. Slapping me would have hurt less. The massacre from a few
days ago flashed through my mind with my next blink. I let out a slow
exhale.
