On the flip side, the “no-strings” premise, while interesting, ends up carrying predictability. Many of the conflicts stem from Naomi’s resistance to change and Christian’s attempts to break past that resistance—so once you’ve seen a few such stories, some plot beats feel familiar. Also, the emotional pay-offs require a leap of trust from the reader: accepting that both leads can really shift without ret-reading their own fears. But overall, Rules Of Engagement: St. Louis delivers a strong mix of heat and heart. It may not reinvent the trope, but it executes it with enough emotion and tension to make it an engaging read.
