“Sebastian Blood!” Percy English shouted.
The sailors, who were hoisting the giant rope nets filled with cargo on to
the deck of the docked ship, stopped abruptly and turned their heads. The
man who had been addressed did not move, or even acknowledge the
impertinent summons.

“Sebastian Blood!” Percy bellowed and marched forward swatting at
people in his path as though they were irritating flies.
Sebastian remained as he was, stoic and solid in his stance. Only when
Percy stood directly behind him, his rum infested breathe hot on his neck, did
Sebastian turn around. “You wished to speak with me?”
Dark blue eyes pierced Percy with a bone-chilling stare and he stumbled
back. “Yes, sir, Mr. Blood.
Sebastian nodded for him to continue.
Percy wiped the sweat from his bald head as he pleaded his case. “I need
this job real bad. Don’t fire me.”
Sebastian glared at the enormous fellow whose towering height easily
matched his own, though the width of the man was three times that of his.
While it may intimidate some men, it didn’t even cause Sebastian to blink.
“I’ve got to sail, Mr. Blood, I’ve just got to.”
Percy’s lack of repentance irritated him. “You should have thought about
that before smashing the Hades Saloon to pieces.”
“I-I lost my head. It won’t happen again.”
Still no apology only excuses. Sebastian was curt as he stepped around
the bear-sized man. “Too late, Percy.”
A sharp yank at his coat sleeve stopped him abruptly.
Percy realized his mistake instantly and released the dark material as
though it were a hot branding iron scorching his calloused hand.
A hush fell over the area and it was as if the bay air held its breath. Any
fool knew that no one dare touched the Dragon. There wasn’t a man alive
who could defeat him in a fight, for he fought like no other man. Whispers
surfaced along with mumbles of betting odds. And all waited for the Dragon
to turn around.
“When you learn to control your liquor, come see me.” Sebastian said
sternly, took two steps and stopped. “Don’t ever lay a hand on me again,
Percy.” He dismissed Percy without a backward glance.
Sebastian continued on along the wharf accustomed to the ever present
chaos. Merchants argued over late arrivals and delayed boarding of
merchandise. The Chinese men and women hawked their wares and tended
their businesses, their influence heavy along the Barbary Coast, the
completion of the railroads leaving them little choice but to build new lives in
America.
The pungent odor of raw fish, foreign spices and odors hard to define
permeated the area. It added to the rich culture and livelihood of the wharf
and he loved every minute of it.
