MY LOADED DUFFEL BAG went flying across the room. I let go of the
trash bag filled with shoes I’d been carrying and spun around, raising an
eyebrow at my sister.
“That could have taken my head off.”
Helen laughed. “Oh, please. Your head is way too hard to be knocked off
by a tiny little bag.”
I poked the fifty-pound duffel. “Tiny? My entire wardrobe is in here.”
She nodded at the garment bag laid neatly beside it. “That’s got your
wardrobe. The duffel has your poor, neglected weekend clothes.”
Moving to the bed, I picked up the garment bag and unzipped it, taking
out the blazers and pleated skirts. Since ironing wasn’t my thing, these
needed to be hung in my closet immediately, or I’d be wearing a wrinkled
uniform on the first day of class.
“My weekend clothes don’t have feelings, so don’t feel too sorry for
them.” I bounced by Helen, pausing to tickle Madelina’s downy soft cheek.
She was asleep, of course, since that was what two-month-old babies did
and she always zonked out the moment Helen strapped her to her chest.
I still couldn’t quite get over my sister being a mom.
As soon as I unzipped my bag, Helen was reaching around me and
tugging out one of my beloved pairs of Dickies. She wrinkled her nose at
them like she always did. What kind of skater didn’t like Dickies? My
sister, that’s who.
“Aren’t you ready to outgrow these?” She flapped my Charlie cutoffs in
front of her. “You’re a senior now. These are from middle school, kid.”
I snagged them from her and held them to my chest protectively. “And?
These things would survive a nuclear blast. I’ll be wearing them at my
funeral when I’m ninety-two.”
