The costume fit. Finally.
I exhaled with relief and stepped back from the woman in front of me.
She was the leading lady, and one of the men in the production had stepped
on the back hem of the dress and torn it. I’d been the poor sod in charge of
fixing it.
I was the costume designer for the entire Night on the Ton production.
And it was a huge job.
“Zee?” someone called behind me.
“All right, you’re good to go on,” I told the leading actress, and she
hurried to her first post, ready to glide onto the stage and begin the
performance. I whirled to find another of my assistants, Debbie, holding out
one of the costumes for the final act. It had a smudge of something grosslooking on one sleeve.
“Any idea how to get this out?” she asked me.
I hurried closer to get a better look and frowned. Whatever it was, it was
going to show if I didn’t do something and there wasn’t time to wash it. We
were going to have to modify the dress to cover it up.
As I lifted it, I considered if we had any of the fabric left to make a new
sleeve and if there was time for that level of reconstruction. After tonight,
there might be, but not before it was needed on stage.
“We’ll add a shawl tonight, and then I’ll come up with a better fix for
tomorrow’s show if I can.” Debbie nodded and carried the dress toward the
section of the room with our extra props. Sometimes, we mixed things up
anyway, and there were always spares of items like shawls and hats, which
we’d tried over the months and gotten rid of again.
I followed her, knowing I wanted to make sure this worked as a coverup. A thin shawl or one that was too light might not hide the mark well
enough. And it would need to be pinned in place, if possible.
No sooner had I thought this than my hand was reaching into my
pocket. I carried safety pins around with me everywhere. They were almost
always needed, and a well-placed safety pin could hold almost anything
together.
“What about this one?” Debbie pulled out one of the light blue cotton
shawls I’d grabbed in a bargain sale somewhere. I frowned and shook my
head. It would look very wrong against the yellow.
“We need something cream, or some shades of green or orange might
work. Thicker, though. Like this one.” I was pleased she’d gotten the type
of fabric correct, at least.
We spent the next five minutes hunting through the box, pulling out
option after option and holding it up against the dress. I was about to
despair of finding anything that would go until Deb exclaimed and held up
a cotton shawl with lace trim that had never been used. It was so far down
the box that I’d even forgotten we had.
