AN INVITATION
Ablinding glare bounces off the sequin fabric and into my eyes, pulling
me out of trapping thoughts.
Often, usually moments where my body is still, it’s as if something
grabs hold of me and drags me to places not of my choosing. It started
when I was a child. One minute I’ll be daydreaming, and the next
strange visions hold my mind hostage.
Before the glare saves me, I find myself in a place my mind takes me
consistently. A cliff leading to a blanket of profuse fog. Though nothing
is clear to me, I know I’m higher than I’ve ever been, or would ever
like to be. The only other thing around is another being, but as many
times as I visit the cliff, I never learn who stands beside me.
Pulling myself back to the sitting room, I desperately want to close the
drapes, cutting off the light, but knowing everyone will surely protest, I
keep still.

--- --- --- --- ---
Across the room, my mother’s thin eyebrows draw close as she sews
crystal beads and tiny white flowers onto the very blinding fabric. The
arch in her back makes mine hurt.
The material of the dress ripples over wood, creating a river that flows
through our sitting room. Almost looking glorious enough to dive into.
My mother rests the fabric and sewing needle in her lap as she
repeatedly balls her hand into a fist and then stretches out all fingers. A
vibrant red spreads over her milky skin. The back of her hand catches
damp beads from her forehead as she pushes away dark waves that are
wandering in front of her eyes.
She finds my gaze, a soft green comforting me. “Almost done,” she
says, mouthing the words.
Standing next to her is my best friend Jewels, whose oval face remains
dry despite the uncomfortable heat around us. The warm undertones of
her golden skin remaining flawless.
Memories of Jewels go back as far as I can remember. Living in an area
where your closest neighbor is over an hour’s walk away makes it
difficult to meet people, let alone meet a best friend. I wouldn’t trade
her for anything.
Keeping her legs still so as not to mess with her dress alterations, she
sways her upper body to a soothing combination of piano and violin
notes. One hand extends onto an invisible shoulder and the other rests
in an invisible hand. She flutters her long butterfly lashes, and I tuck
my lips into my mouth, forming a thin line, trying to keep from
laughing.
Her enthusiasm for tomorrow undeniably surpasses mine.
I fan myself with my hand. It isn’t a hot day in the kingdom, but my
mother needed to melt together some pieces for our dresses, and the
only way to do so was to start a fire. Even with the decent size of the
sitting room, it’s still way too hot.
Near the window to my right, the bench chair belonging to my grand
piano is tempting. With that thought, my legs remind me just how long
I’ve been standing. It’s been three hours since Jewels and Krispin
arrived, and no one has taken a break.
