SKYLA
Put the mop down and step away from the bucket,” Jessie orders.
I keep my back to her and continue to scrub the floor of my
office.

“Skyla, you’re going to wipe the shine from the marble.”
She’s wrong. Marble gets its name from the way it glistens, much like my
eyes at this very moment.
“I’ve been overwatering my Swiss Cheese plant and now the pot’s left a
mark.”
Jessie steps closer. “I never knew cheese grew on plants.”
Her voice is too strained to carry the joke, but I play along and laugh even
though it hurts my throat.
Jessie’s hand grabs mine, stilling my action. “I heard what that bastard
did.”
I divert my gaze out of the window instead of meeting her probing stare.
The sun is shining too brightly for April, like it somehow lost the memo that
today is a dark day. After what happened, I’d done the first thing I always do
when I’m in a mess—clean.
In the courtyard below, my boss, Mr. Blingwood, is taking a call. He’s
beside the elaborate fountain that marks the entrance to the finest hotel in
Santa Barbara. Shouldering his cell against his ear, he pulls the sleeve of his
suit jacket up to check his watch. He’s always so busy. Any moment now,
he’ll dash inside our office building and, if I’m not careful, catch me idling.
I need to pull myself together.
Dropping the mop in the bucket, I turn to face Jessie. She’s wearing her
pink maid outfit with white canvas sneakers. She looks like a Hollywood
starlet playing a part in a movie, instead of the best housekeeper the resort
has. “I’m fine. It’s not like Mike and I were exclusive.” The smile I force on
my lips is trembling.
“Skyla, you went out for dinner three times last week. He had flowers
delivered to your desk—then he screws the new hire in the cleaning closet! I
don’t care if you weren’t ‘official,’ that’s not how a guy plays things casual.
It’s downright disrespectful. He’s been playing you this whole time.” Even
though I wince at the brutal truth, she keeps going, “But don’t you worry, I’m
going to get him back. If he wants to play, then game on. I’m up to bat and
my eyes are on his balls!”
I shake my head. “Let karma take care of it. No point you getting fired or
landing yourself in jail.” I try to reassure Jessie that there is no need to be
angry on my behalf, but nothing is deterring her from her warpath.
“I’ll torture him first, screw with everything he ever loved. The Star Trek
figurines on his shelf—they’re dead—and the picture of his sister, that’s next.
I mean, who has a picture of their sibling on their desk? It’s weird! Then I’m
going to—”
“Jess, it’s fine. I’m fine. We wanted different things, that’s all.”
“You’re damn right you wanted different things. You wanted and
deserved respect and he wanted to screw the new girl! He is a lowlife, Skyla.”
