Naming the House Ghost
Harley
I wasn’t sure if I needed to call a handyman, a matchmaking service, or
an exorcist. There had to be something defective with my inn if the
bottom cabinet in the bathroom kept swinging at my kneecaps at the exact
moment that I walked by. Logically, I thought a handyman would come in
—well—handy if I ever had enough money to quit fixing things around
here myself. As it was, most of the items I “fixed” at the inn lately were
really hanging on by a strand of duct tape and a prayer.
Of course, if I hired a matchmaking service, maybe I could find a
relationship with a man instead of with a house, and then I could focus on
fixing a human instead of a building. Was it sad that my connection to my
bed and breakfast was the closest relationship I had, especially since my inn

And naturally, an exorcist would be necessary if the house was truly as

Naming the House Ghost

Rubbing the knot on my shin where the cabinet door had made its
impact, I contemplated naming the house ghost. On one hand, it would give
me something other than curse words to shout whenever the house
misbehaved. On the other hand, curse words seemed to take the pain out
just a bit.
But as I stood up and made my way down the stairs to the front desk, I
realized that it was times like this when I may have officially hit a new low.
My closest relationship was with an imaginary house ghost, and I didn’t
even know its name.
The stairs creaked beneath my feet, evoking a new set of choice words.
Great. Just great.
“If you don’t stop muttering like an angry old man, we’re never going to
have guests,” Maggie called up from the front desk on the first level. I
paused, my hand on the polished curve of the grand staircase, to call back to
her.
“The house is being snarky about my life choices again!” I protested. I
could feel Maggie rolling her eyes, even if I couldn’t see it. My sister
Maggie helped a few times a week at the front desk of the inn and even
helped get it on the map as the oldest building in Burnt Creek. Thanks to
my hard work on the renovations to restore it back to the original style, I
reasoned the seven bedroom, eight-and-a-half bath bed and breakfast was
probably the most beautiful as well.
