KATE
Rushing through the hospital doors, I’m hit by the stale smells of
disinfectant and lingering anxiety. I have general directions, so I bypass the
reception desk and aim for the elevators. My hands shake and nerves swirl
around the pit of my stomach as I take five quiet seconds in the elevator car
to steel myself against being in the same room as Arik for the first time in
twelve years.

--- --- --- --- ---
He’s always made himself scarce during my sporadic visits back home
to Idaho—to benefit himself or me, I don’t know. I’ve always appreciated
that I don’t bump into him when I’m in town. It’s been years, but every time
I remember what he said to his friends, it leaves behind the hollow ache of
the young brokenhearted girl I was. Those feelings are something that time
and distance haven’t erased.
The elevator doors don’t fully open before I’m out and headed to the
nurses’ station. Speaking to the first nurse I reach, I introduce myself and
ask if Gram is out of surgery. My voice wobbles on the word surgery, so I
clench my back molars to hold it together.
With a compassionate smile in place, the nurse taps away on the
keyboard. After glancing at the monitor and checking my ID, she informs
me, “Mrs. Palicki is finished, and she’s about to move to recovery. The
waiting room is down the hall and to the right. A doctor will be out to speak
to you soon.”
Turning from the desk, I head toward the waiting room, the multitude of
questions I have bouncing around like chipmunks on crack in my mind.
How bad is the break? What’s the recovery time? How much help will she
need? Is she going to need a nurse? How do we get her home? The gray
walls give way, and I’m at the waiting room entrance before I’m ready.
Stepping inside the room, I expect to find Arik, but he’s not the first person
I see. It’s the elderly gentleman sitting next to my once best friend. Mr.
Dawson, my history teacher from tenth grade, has his head in his hands and
is slumped forward in the chair, worry and concern radiating from him.
What the hell is he doing here? My brain blips and stutters trying to put
the puzzle pieces together. Error: does not compute.
Arik waves me over. “Kate, come on in and sit down. Are you okay?”
A shiver works its way down my spine from the rough and gritty
grumble that is Arik’s voice now, and the thought that adulthood has been
gracious to him arcs across my mind like a shining beacon of—nope, not
going there.
