RADIOACTIVE SPIDERS
Tired, hungry, and harboring sand in the most unfortunate of places, the
elves and I wandered through the desert like biblical pariahs. And while it
didn’t take us forty years to reach the mountains on the eastern side of the
Wastes, the hours certainly seemed to pass like seasons. But after five solid
months – er, hours – of traipsing, we finally managed to find the elusive
entrance to the tommyknocker mines: a small, unmarked tunnel hiding
beneath the shadow of the towering mountain ridge that separated the
Western Wastes from the rest of the continent.
As we approached the wood-framed mouth of the cave, it wasn’t relief
I felt, but a wave of cold dread – one that reminded me how utterly illprepared I was for whatever might be lurking deep within the bowels of
these mountains. Despite Zayn’s assurances that the mines would be safe,
I’d seen a solid two-thirds of the Hobbit trilogy, and therefore considered
myself well-versed on the topic of hollow fantasy mountains. Orcs,
dwarves, goblins, gold-hoarding dragons – whatever might be waiting for
us down there, I wasn’t about to be caught off-guard this time around.
During our nighttime hike through the desert, I’d not only memorized every
single existing rune on my body, I’d hand-drawn a few more from memory
– slightly less effective than their needle-etched counterparts, but hey,
lightning is lightning.
Although… I frowned at the sky. How does that work if I’m inside a
mountain?
While I considered that question, Biscuit’s tattoo flared with heat.
Talia, a soft, husky voice filled my ears, making my heart leap into my
throat. Are you there?
Zayn, I sighed, pressing my hand to my fluttering chest. How are you?
How’s Mavros? Is she doing any better with the separation sickness?
She’s determined to help, so she’s hanging in there. His soft laugh
brushed against the inside of my ears. I can only think of one other creature
that’s more head-strong and obstinate than she is.
I grinned. You’re talking about Biscuit, right?
Yeah, he snorted. Sure. His tone shifted. Hey, we’re approaching the
palace now. Be safe, okay? Don’t forget to freshen up your Revitalization
Runes every so often, and make sure you don’t touch anyone – no
handshakes, high-fives, nothing. I’ll be here, impatiently waiting for you on
the other side.
I nodded – not that he could see it. Give my mom a hug, okay?
Especially since… I swallowed, blinking back tears. Well…you know.
Talia, Zayn’s voice was as hard as steel, we’re going to figure this out.
So help me God, I will get that mark off your shoulder. You have my word.
“Talia?”
“What?” I started, whirling around to find Korinne’s lanternilluminated face.
“You’ve been standing there for a long time. Do you want us to send a
scout ahead?”
“No.” I shook my head, silently bidding Zayn goodbye for the moment.
“Just make sure everyone is on high-alert. And maybe tell those with
working shields to activate them ahead of time, in case there are any, like,
dragons inside.”
“Dragons nest inside volcanoes, not in underground mines,” she replied
matter-of-factly. Then, pitching her voice lower,
