Take Me is the fifth entry in the Cherry Blossom Lake series, and it leans hard into the fake-dating / friends-to-lovers trope wrapped in wedding chaos. The basic premise is fun: after getting dumped, the hero enlists his best friend (Erika) to be his “date” for a slew of weddings that are coming up, and the arrangement snowballs from something purely convenient into something messy, sexy, and emotionally honest. Fenske uses the weddings and small-town backdrops not just as scenery, but as catalysts: all the forced encounters, family expectations, and festive romance make for perfect tension.
Erika and the hero (her longtime friend) have a believable history and chemistry. There’s warmth in their friendship that helps the transition to romantic interest feel grounded rather than abrupt. Fenske writes banter well, and there’s enough insecurity and “what if this changes things” tension to keep things from being bland. We see both characters wrestle with what honesty, vulnerability, and risk really mean when what starts as pretend starts to feel real. That emotional pull is one of the book’s strong suits.
On the flip side, because it’s part of a series with many interconnected characters and ongoing dramas, some of the secondary character baggage can feel like it leeches into the main plot—occasional assumptions, misunderstandings, or lingering relational threads that slow things down a bit. Also, the fake-dating / “we’re friends but also more” dynamic is a trope many readers will be familiar with, so it doesn’t always surprise. But overall, Take Me delivers what it promises: warmth, plenty of steam, laughs, and a satisfying payoff for readers who love friends-to-lovers with emotional stakes turned up by small-town weddings.
