MACKENZIE
Even with the water running, I could still hear them making racket in
the living room. It took all of my self-control not to run out to the
living room and scream at Georgia to tune her fucking guitar. Between her
flat G string and Nicole’s rushing, I wanted to gouge out my eardrums.
They’d been “jamming” all fricken night. I’d told them to quiet down
three times, but their ability to retain the concept of being considerate had,
literally and figuratively, gone up in smoke.

The skunky air wafting from the balcony coupled with the noise of the
sliding glass door opening and closing all night long meant that I’d have to
deal with my fully baked roommates in the living room before I could even
get to the kitchen to get my cup of coffee.
Every time I had to be up early in the morning, I’d get derailed. But not
today. Today, I was determined to get to the bake sale early and have
everything set up in advance.
I let the warm water run over me and tried to relax my muscles. My
neck and back were sore from my old mattress. It’d have to go on a list of
all the other shit I needed to take care of when I got the music teacher job.
Or I should say if I got the job. No. I was going to be positive. I’d
worked hard during my internship, and I’d paid my dues working part time
as assistant to the current band director despite the shitty pay.
They had to hire me.
I sighed and reached for my essential oil bath wash. Another huge
financial mistake. Man, I’d been so lost when things hadn’t worked out with
the band that I’d fallen for a pyramid scheme.
But all of that was behind me. I was a responsible adult now. Or at least
that’s what I kept telling myself. It’d become a mantra.
The hot water faded, so I tried to hurry washing my hair. But my dark
hair had grown so so long that the water was half cold by the time I rinsed
the conditioner out.
I jumped out of the shower, toweled off, and went to my bedroom to get
dressed. The marching band bake sale started in 90 minutes, and I needed at
least a half hour to set up.
I threw on some shorts and my Coral Creek HS Marching Band T-shirt
and rushed past my roommates in the living room to get to the kitchen.
That’s when I saw that half of my brownies had disappeared.
I stormed into the living room holding the half empty pan. “I told you
guys this was for the bake sale!”
“Consider them sold, and tell us how much we owe,” Georgia said.
I glared at my roommates. “I told you not to eat them.”
“I’m fucking sorry about your stupid brownies. All right, Mackie,”
Nicole said.
“It’s Mackenzie,” I corrected. “And you owe me 24 bucks for the
brownies.”
Nicole rolled her eyes. “Why don’t you have a smoke so you calm
down?”
“Yeah,” Georgia joined in, “then you can have it be a wake and bake
sale.”
