THE DEAD AND THE RECKLESS
Of vertebrate and invertebrate animals alone, scientists estimate some
five million species are as yet undiscovered, as well as somewhere
between one and ten million — depending on which study you read —
unknown species of bacterial and plant life. It’s also estimated that ninetyfive percent of the world’s oceans remain unexplored, making it impossible
for the rational mind to believe there are no great mysteries left in the
world. Add to that the first law of thermodynamics, which states that
energy, of which all living things are comprised, can be neither created nor
destroyed — that life simply is, was, and forever will be — and only a fool
could take existence and the world at face value. And that’s only what we
know about life on Earth. Never mind what might be happening on other
planets, in other solar systems, in other galaxies.

But Cade Colter wasn’t interested in the mysteries of the sea, life on
other planets, or even what became of energy. There were plenty of enigmas
right here in Crimson Cove, thank you very much, and if living in the
touristy little northern California town had taught him anything, it’s that
nothing was impossible. In the year since he’d arrived, he’d come to believe
in many things he’d once scoffed at — primarily, the existence of vampires.
Honest-to-God, card-carrying, real-life vampires.
They were real and they clung to Crimson Cove like moss on a
riverbank. Like their human counterparts, some were good, some were bad,
and within that species were various breeds, each with its own set of subtle
differences — but they were all undead just the same.
And pretty much every problem Cade had was because of them.
That’s what he was thinking as he stood at the kitchen window, staring
out toward Samantha Corbett’s grave. Her final resting place wasn’t visible
from here. At this distance, he only saw endless tall redwoods and low
shrubs hugging the ground, the winding dirt path he hadn’t jogged in too
long, and the occasional glimmer of Crimson Lake beyond — but he knew
exactly where she was buried. He’d helped dig the grave himself. One day
he’d work up his nerve and take some flowers out there — but today was
not that day. It was still too soon. He wasn’t ready yet.
As he did every morning, he grabbed a spoon and a jar of Peddler
Puck’s peanut butter, and sat at the kitchen table and ate, his thoughts
following the same dark path they always did: Samantha — and then
Brooks.
Brooks.
When he thought of his older brother, Cade’s mood turned even blacker,
and during these macabre morning meditations, it didn’t help to remind
himself that it had been an accident. Logically, he knew that Brooks was as
much a victim as Samantha herself, and that he was truly remorseful — but
logic didn’t change anything. It didn’t bring Samantha back and it didn’t
wash the blood from Brooks’ hands.
Cade was trying to forgive his brother but it wasn’t really working. Still
pulsing inside of Cade was a black sac of poisonous rage. It threatened to
burst and spread, and he couldn’t let that happen. If it did, he knew no one
