The temple’s inner sanctum was a place for the holy and the worthy.
Rayelle had never been either of those things and yet here she sat. Blessing
Givers were usually consecrated by eighteen, so she was three years older
than she’d planned, yet she’d made it. A year later than her younger sister
Sephonia, but still.

--- --- --- --- ---
A ray of sunlight streamed through the stained glass windows of the
Temple of Glass and splayed a kaleidoscope of color on the stone beside her
fabric-draped knees. She wore the dress her mother had commissioned from
the most skilled seamstress in Areth, and it fit perfectly.
For months she’d stared at the gauzy cloth hanging in the middle of her
wardrobe and wondered whether it would suit her. She needn’t have
worried. The soft cream set off her tanned skin, and the fit flattered her
hips. Now, kneeling in this sacred place today of all days, the tiniest bit of
hope sprung up within her. After everything she’d done wrong, perhaps
there was still a chance of living up to her mother’s title.
She tamped the feeling down as she fingered her dark braid and tucked
a loose strand of hair into the woven plaits. Hope was dangerous. Even if
she made it through today without messing up, tomorrow, she’d be back to
regular Rayelle. Best not to wish for a different version of her reality.
Her gaze wandered past the vase of flowers on the pedestal and landed
on the faded images ahead depicting the creation of the Passage Realm.
In the beginning, there was Ariathne and Sedoni…
She followed the carvings etched into the stone wall. Two sisters bound
in magic. Rulers of Sayel, the realm of the gods and goddesses. Admiring
their creations and finding joy in their children who worshipped at their
feet. In the next frame, Ariathne descended from her throne, frolicking with
the creations she loved with every beat of her infinite heart.
Rayelle’s heart sped as she imagined what it would be like to see the
Goddess with her own eyes. It had happened before. Their scriptures were
rife with examples of visionaries who’d experienced a visitation.
Guilt niggled at her as her mind wandered. It’s prideful to imagine
oneself in a position of grandeur, she imagined her mother saying. Rayelle
pushed the thought away. She wasn’t pretending she could ever be like the
great prophetesses, but…she had seen things.
Once, she’d been excited to share the images and stories she witnessed
blooming in the air. Yet after receiving strange looks and chastisements, she
no longer discussed them openly.
Her mother was convinced she had a fanciful imagination and
encouraged her to focus more on her lessons. Her peers accused her of
seeking attention. The only person she shared her illusions with now was
Shamir.
Rayelle turned to the next panel on the wall. Ariathne stretched her arm
from Sayel and touched the Passage Realm, gifting pieces of her magic to
her creations. Sedoni was notably absent.
