SARINA
I need to sell a kidney. Or rob a bank. Maybe both.
I stare blankly at the computer screen, hoping the dismal amount in my
bank account will magically change if I look long enough.
How can I start my life when I’m buried in debt? The bills are adding
up faster than I can manage, my paycheck barely making a dent. Between
college and my mom . . .
“Earth to Sarina,” Christy says, playfully tossing a crumpled piece of
paper at me.

“Sorry.” I swivel my chair to face her. “Did you need something?”
She frowns. “No. I just asked if you wanted me to grab something from
the vending machine. But from the look on your face, I’m guessing you
need alcohol, not a snack.” The corners of her mouth lift in a weak smile,
but her brows draw together, revealing her concern. “Want to talk about it?”
“Just the usual. You know, impending doom and despair,” I joke, though
nothing about my situation feels funny.
Christy rises from her seat and perches herself on the edge of my desk.
“All kidding aside, my offer still stands. Move in with me. You know I have
plenty of room, and Ryan won’t mind.” She pulls at her chunky cardigan
sweater, wrapping it tighter around her small frame. She’s always cold,

I’ve only known Christy for a little over a year, but in that short time,

from accepting a job at Scoop, a shameless tabloid magazine. She’s the
kindest, sweetest person I’ve ever known and my only confidant.
Christy knows I’m swimming in debt, drowning actually. Two months
ago, she offered me a lifeline, suggesting I move in with her and her
husband, rent-free to help me get back on my feet. At the time, I declined.
Charity makes me uncomfortable. I know Christy’s offer comes with no
strings attached, but I still can’t bring myself to impose.
I’m not used to depending on people.
But I’m late again on this month’s rent. If I don’t pick up more freelance
projects, I’ll be out on my ass.
“You’re stubborn as hell, you know that?” Christy takes her glasses off
and holds them up to the light, inspecting for smudges.
“So I’ve been told,” I smile, tapping a pen against the edge of my desk.
“What are your thoughts about me moonlighting as a jewel thief?” I lean
back in my chair. “And don’t sugarcoat it. Like the best idea ever or don’t
quit your day job?”
She laughs. “It sounds very Grace Kelly and Cary Grant-esque. I
approve.” She has a beautiful laugh, one that mirrors her genuine kindness.
One thing that bonded us so quickly is our love for old black and white
films. In a city like Los Angeles, it’s rare to find someone so genuine.
“If I’m going to become a thief, there might as well be some glamour
