I walked into Mayfield’s high school varsity sports fieldhouse with my
obligatory dish of snacks under my arm and the frustrations of the day
weighing me down further with each step. There was already a crowd of
parents and community members milling around, socializing, and catching up
on this week’s latest small-town gossip, by the time I walked in with only a
few minutes to spare. I waved to a few parents, and nodded to a few
neighbors but mostly just kept my head down and my feet moving until I
found a spot off to the side to sit and wait for the meeting to start.
I normally was happy for these little community get-togethers, eager to
dive into another project or event, especially this one because it was for the
holiday festivities. But today, I just didn’t have it in me.
And it wasn’t like I had a good excuse for my bad mood, it’d just been a
crappy day.
I’d woken up late, thanks to Walker turning off my alarm when he
meant to turn off his. And then I was stuck trying to get myself and three kids
out the door in record time, which should be an Olympic sport and
recognized at least nationally for the effort it takes. But it had just set the
mood for the way the rest of the day went.
Which was too hell and back on a broomstick covered with barbs.
Eloise, my sweet and sassy six-year-old, decided today was a great day
to fully adopt Walker’s dark and moody disposition as she told me that
kindergarten was a waste of her time because it was full of pea-brained boys
who had no interests in life beyond digging in the mud and picking their
noses.
While she sat in the back seat, picking her nose.
I’d stood on the sidewalk of the school and threatened her with
everything I could come up with on a decaffeinated brain to get her out of the
truck and into the building before the school resource officer shut and locked
the doors for the day.
It just so happened that the SRO today was her favorite Uncle Jake, and
he had quite the merry smirk on his face at the line of threats I’d tossed her
way while he shook his head and waved at me.
I may or may not have flipped him off in return.
Merry fucking Christmas indeed.
