A re you okay, baby?” Tischina asked as she grabbed my hand.
I had been twiddling with my fingers, which was something I
did whenever I was nervous. My relationship with God had been
in place ever since I was a toddler. I was a praying man, but I wasn’t perfect,
and I had made my fair share of mistakes. Over the past few weeks, I had
been coming to God humbly, asking Him to allow today to work in my favor.
My prayer was that this divorce with Naomi would be final, and I would win
sole custody over my son.

I personally believed that in order for a little boy to grow up and become
a great man, he needed a great man to raise him. That was reason number one
why I should be granted full custody of my boy. Not only that, but I made
almost three times what Naomi made, so LJ would be more than taken care of
with me. It didn’t matter that LJ didn’t want to live with me. He was just a
kid! My son was nowhere near mature enough to make such an important
decision, so I hoped that Naomi didn’t plan to use that as her argument in
court. I was more than sure it wouldn’t even work.
Although I couldn’t prove it, I knew Naomi was responsible for my son
all of a sudden, not wanting anything to do with me. When Naomi and I were
together, I wasn’t around as often as she would have wanted me to be. I was
always busy at the church, visiting other churches and being there for the
members who were sick and shut-in. Some were fighting for their lives in
hospitals, and I would go and pray for them. Consequently, I wouldn’t be
home every night to eat dinner with my family, to watch LJ achieve a new
milestone, or even to bathe him and read to him at night. Regardless of my
absence, he had always loved his father. That was Naomi’s doing. She’d
turned my own son against me.
“I’m fine. Just nervous, that’s all, but I’m fine,” I said and picked my
eyes up from staring at the floor to look at Tischina.
She would be eight months pregnant next week, and I had to admit that
she was carrying this pregnancy really well.
