The sun was rising over the northern lands. It was chilly, but the men and
mages gathered outside the castle were oblivious to this. Today some of
them would die, and others would meet their fate how it would turn in a few
hours. And whether they would be victorious or defeated in battle – no one
could say for sure. Their eyes were fixed on me and whoever was standing
next to me.
The landscape outside the carriage window flashed inexorable: cities and
towns, villages and hamlets, fields, plains, rivers, and lakes – everything
that lay between Erkarion, the mage lands where I grew up, and Norwinia,
the northern part of Toria country. Toria was populated chiefly by humans
and mages. The former were increasing in number, while the latter
gradually lost their importance and moved to the country’s southwest, to
Erkarion.
Norwinia was one of the most prosperous provinces, bringing more
money into the kingdom’s treasury than any other land because it possessed
significant deposits of precious metals and stones. My family’s wealth was
never enormous, but we were powerful mages. Now, talented magicians
endowed with powers were born less and less, and we were becoming
poorer and losing our usual high position in society.
Unfortunately, what was happening to me now was direct proof of our
poverty and powerlessness. That’s why I was now riding in the carriage,
cursing everything in this world.
I didn’t have time to look at everything and didn’t try hard to do so either.
My thoughts interrupted each other, and I was annoyed and depressed. It’s
disgusting to have so many questions in your head that you don’t know the
answers.
I’d rather take my three days at a leisurely pace with stops at the inns than
rush the horses like that. Better yet, I could use the portal and be at my
destination in the blink of an eye. But my uncle refused to open it, citing
dwindling energy and that it would have taken too long to get a refill from
