--- --- --- --- ---
I fluffed my hair one last time, making sure my blonde curls fell just
right. One final adjustment to my dress displayed my ample cleavage to
its greatest advantage before I strolled inside Horseman’s, a dive bar that
served immortals like me while maintaining a low profile among the
humans of Wales.
I meandered over to the scuffed bar and ordered the cheapest beer on tap.
I didn’t plan on drinking much of it, but I needed something to do while I
kept my eye on Kol, my target tonight. He was nursing a beer, barely visible
in my peripheral vision.
He’d chosen a corner spot, his back to the wall so he could survey the
entire room. Since he was a dragon, that seemed like overkill to me. No one
would start shit with a dragon without a damn good reason.
His green-black skin helped him blend into the shadows so that only his
head, shoulders, and three sets of horns—one large pair from his forehead,
two smaller ones on either side—rose out of the darkness. The shadows
obscured his harsh, angular features, his nose flattened and the nostrils mere
slits.
When he scowled, as he did now, he looked like someone sent to lurk in
the shadows and menace the bar’s patrons. Maybe the owner tolerated his
presence for just that reason. Knowing a dragon might show up kept the
rabble from starting too much trouble.
His golden, slit-pupil gaze perused my body as I sat at the bar, heating
my blood even as I knew that was the wrong response.
I wore a breezy sundress with a plunging neckline and side cutouts,
showing off some skin while still looking effortless and laid back.
I couldn’t wear a bra with this dress. Oops.
Despite his rapt gaze, he didn’t approach.
No worries. He could keep looking. I could keep looking too, appearing
to consider my options. I didn’t want to look too interested before
sauntering my cute butt over to the dragon and introducing myself. I was
quite confident he’d invite me home with him, as long as I did nothing to
make him suspicious of my real motives.
My partner Sorcha’s research suggested Kol preferred one-night stands
with few prerequisites beyond available and willing—not even a strong
gender preference. It was why we selected this method of infiltration.
Sorcha and I typically flipped a coin over honeypot roles, but the risks
inherent in pissing off a dragon were too great for me to let anyone else take
on. I couldn’t risk his wrath falling on anyone else when this job was my
idea.
I perched on my worn barstool and sipped my drink while taking in the
bar, contemplating my opening move.
