In The Duke and His Muse, the heroine Jane Hayward is content illustrating children’s books and living a quiet life in the countryside. When the Duke of Exeter, Graham Bartlett, asks her to write a book for his toddler son—whom Jane initially believes she has no reason to help—she declines, insisting she’s merely an illustrator. But the Duke, recently widowed and realizing too late that he’s been kept from bonding with his child, needs help not just with a book, but with building a relationship with his son. Jane, with her sense of independence and compassion, becomes much more than a professional collaborator; she becomes the emotional bridge between a father and his child, and helps Graham confront both his grief and his doubts about being a capable parent.
What works particularly well is the slow-build connection between Jane and the Duke. Their relationship doesn’t rush to romance; instead, it grows through shared vulnerability, misunderstandings, and honest conversations. Jane isn’t a passive muse; she has her own sense of purpose and agency, and her work—as illustrator and as someone who sees past grief—gives the Duke a chance to grow. The toddler son scenes are sweet without being saccharine, grounding the emotional stakes in a real desire for family, rather than simply romance for its own sake.
If I had to mention places where it falters slightly: some of the pacing feels gentle to the point of predictability, especially in the early‐middle portions, and there are moments where internal doubts repeat a bit more than necessary. But overall, The Duke and His Muse hits the right notes for fans of clean Regency romance: emotional healing, family bonds, and a hero who learns to be more than his title. It’s a satisfying read that leaves one warmed by the end.
