The siren wail cut through the serenity of Disaster City Search and
Rescue Academy, a sprawling complex of simulated wreckage designed
to test both man and canine alike. Brock Sanders, with his dark brown hair
matted to his forehead from exertion, whistled sharply, commanding
attention from his partner in the field. “Blaze, search,” he barked, pointing
toward the debris.

The black and white Dalmatian darted forward, nose to the ground, tail
erect with unwavering focus. Brock’s muscular frame followed suit,
weaving through the concrete slabs and twisted metal that represented
collapsed buildings. His keen eyes monitored every movement of the dog,
interpreting the subtle signals only a seasoned K9 handler could understand.
“Good boy, find them,” Brock encouraged, his voice both firm and
warm, knowing that his new trainees were watching his team’s every move.
Blaze’s ears perked up, and he began to bark near a pile of strategically
placed rubble, signaling a find. Brock rushed over, peeling back layers of
broken materials to reveal a training mannequin. A small crowd of trainees
clad in fire-resistant gear observed intently, learning from the skilled
coordination between handler and dog.
“See that?” Brock said, addressing the trainee closest to him. “He’s got a
drive that doesn’t quit. That’s what we need out here, and it’s your job to
make sure to steer that drive in the right direction.”
The trainee nodded, clearly impressed, but as soon as he took off to get
ready for the next drill, Brock’s thoughts drifted off elsewhere. As he patted
Blaze’s side, his mind wandered to Tamara Ward—the image of her slender
figure and those striking green eyes that could light up even the darkest of
disaster scenes. Every so often, she would pop up in his social media and
cause him to remember how she would laugh, a sound as genuine and
carefree as the wagging of Blaze’s tail after a successful rescue drill.
“Sanders, focus,” Derik Cruise, his fellow firefighter instructor, called
out, snapping Brock back to reality.
He shook his head slightly, banishing the distracting thoughts. “Sorry,
Cruise,” Brock replied, giving Blaze a final pat before standing up. “We’re
ready to watch the trainees go through the run.”
Despite the affirmation, Brock couldn’t shake the longing that lingered
beneath his professional demeanor. He had mastered the art of search and
rescue, forming an unbreakable bond with his loyal K9 partner, yet the one
rescue he yearned to make—to win over Tamara—seemed forever out of
reach. First, it was because she was his college roommate’s girlfriend, and
then it was because they went their separate ways after college.
“All right, trainees. Show us what you’re made of,” he called out, his
voice echoing across the training grounds, masking the silent hope that one
day, he’d have the chance to show her the man he had become. For now, he
had his duty, his team, and Blaze, who never questioned where Brock’s
heart truly lay.
