LOUD WHOOSHING FILLED MY ears as if I was trapped in the middle
of a storm. And like a cyclone blowing debris around, my mind spiraled on
his words, “Now that we have found the lost princess.”
A pair of rough hands squeezed my upper arms, yanking me out of my
trance by pulling me away as a sinister smile crawled its way across the
king’s aged face.

“Wait! You’ve made a mistake.”
With flared nostrils and flattened lips, he snapped, “Are you insinuating
that I, the king, am wrong?”
The two men holding me came to an abrupt stop, nearly dislocating my
shoulder again. My chest heaved as I opened my mouth—
Bang.
The door on the far side of the room flew open. My knees wobbled as
fingernails dug into my arms.
King Madden jumped to his feet and roared, “How dare you—”
“Apologies, my king.” The unannounced guard bowed deeply and stayed
low as he continued, “We have caught a spy within the palace walls.”
“Bring them to me at once,” King Madden ordered with a flick of his
wrist before gesturing for two guards to approach.
He eased back onto his throne and communicated something with the two
guards, too low for me to hear. When he finished, his eyes darted up,
finding me instantly. They widened slightly before settling to reveal
wrinkles in the corners of his eyes. A shiver raced down my spine as his
smile broadened, then he fixed the rings on his hands. “This is something I
wish for you to see.”
My stomach dropped, and I was shoved forward. He watched my every
forced step, stroking his graying beard the whole time. I broke from his
stare as the far doors creaked open again. The same guard entered leading a
slender man, limping, with his arms tied behind his back. The man’s shaggy
auburn hair covered his face and his eyes stayed on the floor. Behind him,
two more guards followed an arm’s length away.
My heart rate spiked as I recalled Crazy Old Pete’s tales of King
Madden’s cruelty.
“We found him snooping around the northern side of the palace, my
king,” the guard in front announced.
“What is his station?” King Madden’s eyes hadn’t left the man. It
reminded me of the time Jules and I watched a black wolf hunt a deer we
had been tracking. They shared the same eerie stillness in their eyes.
“He works in the gardens.”
“Why then, gardener, would you be inside the palace snooping around
where you don’t belong?” The man remained silent, staring at his feet.
“Look at me!”
His head lifted.
I gasped. He was young. He couldn’t have been older than me. It was
hard to tell for sure with his bruised and swollen face.
“Are you with the Northern Rebels?” King Madden’s voice had calmed a
fraction, but the young man remained silent, staring blankly at him. King
Madden shot up and marched down the stairs. “You will answer your king!”
He raised his hand and slapped the man across the face.
I cringed as blood splattered on the floor.
“You’ll never be my king,” the man croaked.
