MAKE A CHILD SAFE. Save a life.
This was Sim’s new motto since reluctantly opening his doors to the little
girl, Elizabeth, who was wandering along the street in front of his house in
the days of his greatest despair.
She had arrived either as part of God’s plan to torture him for the rest of
his days or to facilitate his penance. Two weeks earlier he had shot to death
his wife, Amanda, and his young daughter, Sara, and though Amanda was
near death from the viral disease that had killed most of the rest of the
world, Sara wasn’t sick at all. She might have lived. She might have grown
to be a bold and beautiful leader in this new world, but he never gave her
the chance. He robbed her of her life.

It was Amanda’s suggestion that they all should die together, and Sara
had begged to go with her mother. Sim woefully carried out this plan almost
to the end, but when it came time to turn the gun on himself, he couldn’t do
it.

In the following days, he hoped to starve or die out of pure anguish. He
had heard of people who died from a broken heart and wondered, why not
him?
Then Elizabeth showed up. He saw her through the curtains and opened
the doors.
Make a child safe. Save a life.
In many ways, having Elizabeth in the house was like having Sara
returned to him. In other ways, it was a minute-to-minute reminder of what
he had done.
Over the weeks that followed, and because of this little girl. Sim cleaned
himself up and went on supply runs with Elizabeth, many times carrying
her on his back, as they traveled near and far seeking out food, batteries,
weapons, first aid, medications, seedlings, soil, and a great many other
things.
They dragged beds and mattresses from nearby homes to fill the rooms of
this enormous place, and also took time to scrub and disinfect everything
like new.
There are probably other children out there just like you. We can save
them. They don’t have to die.
Elizabeth loved to run up and down the stairs and play hide-and-seek,
always forcing Sim to be the seeker.
Sim started seeds in the basement and planted fruit-bearing trees in the
backyard while also building an arsenal of weapons that were kept locked
in that same basement’s storage closet.
Elizabeth helped him clean and make the beds, and he taught her how to
use small arms to protect herself and the home.
There was only one time when Sim grew angry with Elizabeth and that
was when she explored Sara’s former bedroom on the third floor. Sim
looked all over for Elizabeth and found her on Sara’s bed. He took her by
the arm and pulled her down.
“Ouch!” she cried, pulling away. “That hurt.”
“I’m sorry,” Sim said. “But I told you not to come in here.”
