mattering again.

--- --- --- --- ---
It takes one full song on the radio to get downtown, and I focus on my
trusty old car’s blinker instead of the doom and gloom that’s become my
life. It’s easier to exist when I shove it all down.
While I’m mentally boxing my emotions into a corner of my mind, a
woman steps out into the middle of the street. I slam on the breaks, cursing.
My front bumper is inches away from her, and I’m not sure if it’s the close
contact or the wind making her hair fly behind her shoulders.
Her face, pale and shocked, haunts me.
I almost killed her.
My pulse hammers.
Meanwhile, she ignores me, lifting a duffle bag haphazardly over her
shoulder and blocking her view of the street. She checks behind her, as if
there’s something more important back there than what just happened, and
barely spares me a glance before continuing to cross the street.
I pull over to park and look out my passenger-side window to see what
she’s looking at, but there’s nothing out of place except an RV parked in
front of the pet store. It breaks size restrictions on public parking, but it’s
not a crime scary enough to risk jumping in front of a speeding car.

Still would’ve been my fault, though. Manslaughter and all.
Main street is quiet, as per usual. A traffic light in front of me lazily
changes colors, just in case a car comes through. The woman scurries
toward it.
With a sudden rush of adrenaline, I hop out of my car and shout after her,
“Hey! Are you okay?” Because that’s the kind of place I live. We check on
one another. We know one another.
But I don’t recognize her.
When she doesn’t do the Midwestern, “Oh yah, no worries,” I know she’s
new.
Her frame scrunches in while she shrinks into the distance. I consider
yelling after her again, telling her there’s no stores open that direction, but
decide against barging in on her day more than I already have.
Why is she in such a rush? And how do I get some of her oomph?
I take my time getting to the cafe down the street. Sam, my oldest friend,
works there in the summers. A smile reaches his eyes when the bell chimes
and he spots me. He’s a gentle soul
