I sing along to the lyrics of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey that’s
blasting from the speakers connected to the DJ’s booth, feeling the beat
reverberating deep in my bones. A gust of humid Hawaiian air sweeps
across my face and through the low bun of loosely twisted curls that are
settled at the base of my neck.

--- --- --- --- ---
My brother, John, spins me on the dance floor, my head falling back in
laughter as he gently tugs on my arm, pulling me close before spinning me
out again.
“I love this song!” he shouts as he bobs his head to the beat, smoothing
his hands down the front of his cream tux. Dancing around me, he weaves
between the other wedding guests that are with us on the overcrowded
dance floor. A grin grows wild on my face as I watch the way he happily
spins around. John married the love of his life, Mia, a few hours ago in a
beach ceremony along the coast of Oahu. It’s truly been nothing short of an
amazing day celebrating the love they have for each other. I may have my
own unpopular opinions about relationships and marriage, but I admit, what
they have is truly beautiful.
John’s been through a lot of heavy stuff the past several years, most
recently struggling with PTSD after serving in the Army, not to mention
everything that happened with our parents. It feels really good to see him
actually embracing and enjoying life. Both he and Mia are basking in the
sweetest just-married, happily-in-love glow. Although, the shots of
Casamigos the wedding party had after the ceremony may be adding to that
glow, if I’m being honest.
We lip-sync the song lyrics in unison, John holding an invisible
microphone to his mouth. As we dance, the daylight continues its gradual
fade as the soft light from the surrounding torchlights slowly get brighter.
The wedding reception is being held in an outdoor garden area of a local
resort that’s right off the beach. A sea of circular tables are spread out
across the courtyard next to the dance floor, each one draped in ivory and
white linens. Blush-pink and sage-green accents decorate each table while
an ethereal-looking tent hovers above, string lights drooping down from
each corner. It’s absolutely magical.
The song ends, and the piano prelude of a slow song starts playing. I’m
grateful for the opportunity to slow down and catch my breath—although I
do fully relish the energy that’s pulsing through me.
“One more?” John asks, smiling and holding his hand out to me.
“Sure,” I say breathlessly with a smile. I wrap my hand in his and bring
my other arm around his shoulders, feeling protected and safe, the way you
do with your big brother.
“What a day, huh? You look happy, bro,” I say, studying his blue eyes
and carefree expression. He sways me side to side, softly squeezing my
hand, then his mouth curves up into a gentle smile.
