Deville County courthouse was nothing special; an old worn building that
showed its age. The bricks were a faded red, and the inside was an old
beige, its linoleum floors squeaking as Debra carried the box of files and
made her way to the elevator.

--- --- --- --- ---
It was already late that Friday, and fireworks could already be heard in
the distance. Memorial Day was always another holiday locals and hicks
celebrated in full swing. And it always started on Friday evenings.
The deputy was already aggravated with her evening, not how she
wanted to start her holiday weekend. Feeling stiff in her uniform and her
feet aching from her boots, Debra waited for three hours for a judge that
never showed and then picked up old files and something from her father’s
old office.
She might’ve been the last person in the building, maybe there was a
custodian left, but there was never any security. She hadn’t seen anyone
after retrieving the belongings.
Debra struggled to keep the box in her hands when she tried to press the
button. Almost dropping it and having to push the button with her hip. Her
tired, hazel eyes peeked up to the numbers above the elevator, watching the
elevator come from the 6th floor just above her and to her level.
Fifth floor.
The janky elevator stopped at Debra’s floor with a roaring screech that
rang in the deputy’s ears, louder than she expected, and she almost dropped
the box till a hand fell underneath it, holding it up for Debra.
She gasped when the box almost slipped, if not for the gloved hand that
caught it; some stranger was kind enough to help her. Lifting enough for her
to take a better hold of it.
The young deputy peeked up to see a familiar face, but she couldn’t
place it. Just some dark hair man, clean looking, with a long coat. He didn’t
smile, just nodded when she thanked him. Then, coldly asked, “What
floor?”
“Er… one, please?” Her voice almost squeaked as she shifted her
oversized box. Then, lifting a leg to keep it afloat as she watched the other
hand lift to press a button to the ground floor as the cramped space dimmed
as the doors shut.
The hand still held a briefcase when he hit the button. She could almost
smell the leather of the black gloves. His hair slick back from his face,
exposing or even displaying such handsome features. She watched as he
constantly looked at the watch on his wrist and subtly tapped his shoe at the
ground. His mannerisms were anxiety-inducing and impatient in nature as
she quickly glanced at him.
Debra just scoffed at herself with the realization, a fucking lawyer.
The deputy tried to keep her eyes forward as she observed him and his
nature. Watching as he tapped the ground floor button once again with more
force. Muttering a swear underneath his lips.
