The Ocean is my home. It sings to my soul, it flows in my veins and bids
me to follow wherever its current takes me. I have no fear of its dark
depths, the salt water is anodyne to pointless nerves. Far below the surface,
fragments of coral lay scattered across the sea floor like bones in a
graveyard, their once vibrant colors now bleached and cracked.

Crabs
scuttle across their decrepit remains. A school of yellowtail tags each other
from reef to reef like children on a playground, hiding behind the reef that
remained standing. Loitering about the otherwise charming ecosystem, are
pieces of broken bottles, their edges not yet smoothed by time, and plastic
bags swaying in the current like imitation kelp.
And there, staining the surface of the ocean like a moldy blight on fruit is
the barnacle-crusted hull of a fishing boat. The net anchored to the bow
sweeps across the ocean floor, demolishing reef after reef with the guttural
moans of a greedy, ravenous beast. The net lurches up, then stops, no fish
entrapped in the wide spaced-holes.
Because they aren’t hunting for fish tonight.
I smile, white teeth flashing wickedly in the dark. My hands flex, the sharp
points of my nails ready to cut and slice and I roll my head around my
shoulders, loose and graceful in the water. My body thrums with the
adrenaline of the hunt. The others would be proud, but I don’t care about
their approval.
I have a mission tonight and more than enough reason to drown these
godforsaken sailors.
Waking up to the taste of carpet was like eating a bowl of Cheerios without
the milk to wash it down, with a few dust bunnies thrown in for good
measure. I reached up, fumbling for the water on my nightstand. My fingers
skimmed the edge of the cup, not high enough to actually grab it, but
enough so that it fell clean off the table and found its target… on my head.
Note to self, hand-eye coordination works better if you use them together.
I groaned, pushing myself up with shaking hands that still felt like they
were cutting into the ocean’s icy current. There were noticeable scratches on
the bed frame that definitely weren’t there when I slumped into it last night.
I could already hear the soft sighs of the tide rolling onto the shore
through my open window, and suddenly sleep was the furthest thing from
my mind. That sound was better than a shot of espresso, red bull, and a pile
of sugar combined.
I clawed my way up the bedspread only to come face to face with a
fifteen-pound monster of orange fluff and impeccable sass. Otto meowed,
annoyed that I disturbed him, then stretched with a yawn that showed all of
his teeth, and ended with another meow that translated to ‘feed me or else.’
