--- --- --- --- ---
Caesar Ortiz was not watching for an angel to fall from the heavens.
Deeply distressed, he had a suffocating need for fresh air to calm his
racing thoughts. The hull of his warship directly outside of his office
cleared his head but didn’t take much weight off of his heart. The President
of the small nation of Pacific leaned heavily on the railing of the ship, his
clouded eyes assessing the waters of the Aegean Sea in deep consideration.
For a fleeting moment, he was desperate enough to hope that the waves
could provide him with a solution to his troubles. But all he saw was the
distorted reflection of his face: severe, frowning, and weathered by years of
leadership and cold wars. Forty-five years… When had he gotten so old?
Their warship had been too late. Another colony had been attacked.
Another failure, another loss… more people, more friends, dead. Caesar
knew there could have been no preventing the attack, failure weighed heavy
on his shoulders, regardless. As did the responsibility for every life lost.
A splash sounded, as loud as a crack of thunder. The President’s head
snapped up from his melancholy reflection, eyes scanning the sea around
him. At first, he only saw calmly splashing waves amongst the expanse of
bright blue. Then his eyes caught something strange: a golden speck
floating a few hundred yards away. He almost missed it as it began to sink.
Caesar turned, looking desperately to see if someone else had witnessed
the crash. Was he going crazy or had he seen a figure fall from the sky?
Before he could shout, alarms began sounding across the ship as the captain
announced an unidentified object in the direction of the crash.
Heavy boots pounded on the deck, followed by their screeching halt and a
breathless question. “Are you alright?”
Caesar turned to the familiar sound of his friend: General Orion Kalfas.
“Something fell into the water,” the President responded distantly, turning
back towards the sea.
Kalfas shook his head as he joined his friend’s side. “From where?
There’s water for miles in every direction!”
The pair were silent as the ship drew closer to the landing site of the
mysterious object. A group of sailors were lowered in a raft to investigate.
There was a collective gasp of shock as those on the ship watched the
rescuers pull what looked like a body from the waves. The President shook
his head as a million possibilities began to stir inside of him.
Was this
newcomer a threat? How did they get there? Caesar and Kalfas pushed
themselves through the crowd gathering at the ship’s hull as the raft was
pulled up from the sea. Concern throughout the crew was tangible and
Caesar wanted to be the first to intercept the phenomena.
The sailors raised a raft up to the boat’s side and then two men hoisted a
gurney onto the deck. Caesar recognized a body resting on the gurney as it
