JUNE 1988
Today, I was going to ride my new bike, even if I only had Mom’s
permission to go to the corner and back. The garage door creaked and
moaned as it rolled up. I waited until the sun lit the darkness of the cluttered
space before stepping into the garage. Maneuvering between my parent’s
projects and tools, I squeezed through the boxes and toys that my siblings
and I had strewn about. I wrangled my pink Schwinn bicycle from behind
some glass-bottle soda crates. I swung my leg over the flowered banana seat
and peddled out.

“Car!” the second-grader in my class, Chris, called out. Like a wellrehearsed dance, the boys all grabbed the nets and their gear and hustled to
the curb. As soon as the car passed, Chris screamed, “Game on!” and they
all shuffled back to the exact spot in the game where they’d left off. I rode
down the driveway, gaining speed on the decline, and raced in the opposite
direction from the boys before they spotted me.
I cycled from one end of the sidewalk to the other. I paused at the
corner and contemplated disobeying Mom. What could happen if I
continued around the block? I turned back around and continued on. A
loud, repetitive beeping blared to life, interrupting my thoughts and I
skidded to a halt. A massive U-Haul truck missed the driveway and jumped
the curb, its tires tearing through the pristinely manicured rose bushes. A
tall woman strode out of the garage, waving to get the driver’s attention.
Half of his body hung out the truck’s window as he tried to gauge where to
put its butt. She succeeded in guiding him the rest of the way and the truck
made it securely within the confines of the asphalt driveway. Who were
these people?
I skidded to a stop directly across the street from their brown, brick
house. My heart thumped in anticipation as I stood, straddling my bike, but
I forced myself to stay put. Anxiety brewed in the pit of my stomach over
the prospect of meeting new people, and the idea of me initiating was too
much.
A moment passed, and a little blond-haired boy ran squealing from the
side of the house. His laughter made me smile. Another boy, a few inches
taller, chased after him.
“I’m gonna get you, Charlie!”
More squeals of delight from the cute little boy ensued. The darkhaired boy was about to grasp Charlie when he stopped and un-crouched
from his tickle attack mode to stare at me. All I could do was stare back.
The urge to cross the street grew stronger, the feeling beautifully
unsettling and hauntingly familiar. I desperately wanted to meet this dark
hair boy—I never cared to meet anyone before.
