ASHLEY
Your debt will be paid, he’d said.
You won’t have to worry about me killing you, he’d said.
What Hercules, the very rich and stuck-up bastard that I worked for,
hadn’t said was that breaking into this glass doghouse would be a pain in
my ass.
I was one of the best art thieves in the world, yet here I was, wishing I
had put on stronger deodorant.
I eyed the sign next to the door of the stairwell. I was on the 66th floor
of the Helm, one of the most striking skyscrapers in the entire city, and now
officially drenched in sweat.
The blueprint I had was outdated, which made this job ten times harder
than it should have been. Sneaking my way up here had been challenging
enough, not to mention I had to slip past countless guards with a bag that
could safely transport a painting.
Not just any painting either. My golden ticket to freedom.
Pulling the door open just a smidge, I looked down the hall, eyeing the
camera at the end. Despite the way my palms exuded moisture, and my
thighs burned like I’d been trapped in pilates hell, everything was still
working in my favor.
I watched in satisfaction as the green light on the camera turned red, my
signal that the security system was now being shown a nice feed of a black
and white cartoon I’d found online.
It was go time.
I ran down the hall, no longer needing to be sneaky with the cameras
off. I made it to the door at the very end and knelt in front of it, listening for
any movement.
Hercules had promised that the victims of my heist were out of the
building, preoccupied with another one of their turf wars.
My stomach twisted. Stealing from humans with private collections was
no big deal, but breaking into a place owned by monsters made me jumpy.
This wasn’t my normal gig, but I had no choice. I owed money to some real
bastards, and this was how I would keep my pretty face away from their
crosshairs.
Karma was actually a bitch, it turned out.
I’d never done anything bad. Well, unless you consider stealing
priceless art bad. But I wasn’t a killer. I wasn’t a villain. Sure, I was
technically a criminal, but I never did anything to actually harm others. I
did my best to keep my hands clean of blood and pain.
The problem was not everyone within Moirai City played by the same
rules.
That included assholes like the ones that owned this ridiculous
penthouse. They rolled in their money, eating people who weren’t smart
enough to play dirty for breakfast. I imagined they liked to throw souls like
me in with their Fruit Loops, drinking the blood of anyone with a moral
compass like it was whole milk.
“Bastards,” I muttered and then froze.
I listened for a few moments and found that I was still alone. The hall
was empty, the camera still blinking red.
