This must be what death feels like.
I’d always imagined it would be the absence of feeling, the darkening of
the thoughts that lurked in the back of my mind. But I was wrong. Death
wasn’t gentle at all.
It was like being ripped from my body. I could feel the beat of my heart
in my ears. Except I wasn’t in my body. My blood flowed all around me.
Me, except not. What was I?
I wasn’t in my body. I was everywhere. My heart, my blood, my skin…
was that my soul I saw, spinning in swirls of silver and blue?
Death was painful and exquisite. Like waking in the morning and
stretching until every limb tingled.

Then I slammed into the ground.
My legs crumbled beneath me, my knees landing in the dirt.
Not dirt, I realized. Sand.
My hands landed in it as I fell forward, sinking into the wet muck. I
tried to push myself up but slid instead, the wet sand coating my forearms. I
clenched the muscles in my abdomen, pulling myself back up without the
help of my hands.
Where was I? This wasn’t the goldstone palace, this wasn’t even
Annwyn—
Yes, it is.
Ahead of me, still and undisturbed despite my floundering, was a
seemingly endless expanse of cerulean water.
The Split Sea.
This couldn’t be. It was nearly two weeks’ travel from Baylaur to this
coastline.
Impossible.
But there was nowhere else in the world where the sea lay still, without
a single wave to break its crystalline surface. Nowhere else but the cursed
Split Sea.
Unless this was not Annwyn.
No, no, no. That was even more impossible.
I had to get up. Wherever I was, I couldn’t remain exposed on the shore
like this. I was armed only with my brother’s gargantuan sword. It would
slow me down, when speed was my main advantage. I couldn’t wait here
for some enemy to find me, alone and exposed.
I clenched my core muscles once again, dragging one leg up out of the
sucking sand.
But when I planted my foot, the world spun away again.

Mate. Mate. Mate.
The word pounded in my head, in my soul. Its staccato beat was all I
could hear or make sense of. Three hundred years of battlefield training
melted away to nothing. Because nothing could have prepared me for the
moment I would find out Veyka was my mate. The same moment that she
was torn away from me.
“Where is she?”
“The Queen—”
“Your Majesty…”
Mate.
You let her go. You failed to protect her.
I’d been holding her hand, and she’d still be ripped away from me—
torn from my grasp by some otherworldly magic.
Magic.
Veyka didn’t possess magic.
The beast within me growled, low and deep. A warning. He would not
tolerate this separation for long. He’d wanted her before, loved her before.
But this…
Mate.
This was something else. More than love or even lust. This was destiny.
