Act I, Scene I: The House of Ray, London
Savi
Expectation is the root of all heartache.
And my mother expected me to marry a man I didn’t care for.
‘Savi, please. This is the end of this discussion.’ My mother—
exasperated—paced while my father—still seated—held his fist against his
mouth. He often did this for fear of what he might say as if he could contain
the words with his hand.

‘Technically, I have not disagreed nor gone against the arrangement.’
This was what we took to calling my impending nuptials.
‘Six months. Savi, another six months without setting a date for the
engagement. Rohan and his family have everything ready and waiting on
you.’
‘It’s also a prestigious course I won’t be able to attend for another year.
Wouldn’t it serve us well to have this knowledge now?’ I asked. I
considered every angle my parents—mostly my mother—would throw at
me when I proposed I do this course abroad.
‘You can do it here. Do a course at your old university,’ my mother said,
crossing her arms over her chest to take her stand.
‘Let’s talk about this,’ my father said, sighing and looking over at my
mother.
‘Thank you, Baba.’
‘This is why she always gets what she wants because she has you
wrapped around her fingers.’ My mother made a show of clutching her
pinkie with her other hand.
I did everything in my power not to sigh and roll my eyes. I did not
think six months was a long time in the greater scheme of things. Compared
to spending the rest of my life with Rohan, it was a drop in the ocean. Sorry,
Doctor Rohan Bhatt, as he often corrected me and anyone else who was in
the vicinity.
A title he only had thanks to his Doctorate in IT.
I kneeled beside my father’s well-loved green velvet chair; the tassels
fraying near my arm mimicked what went on inside my head. ‘Baba,’ I said
as I adjusted the black-framed glasses on my face. I knew it would soften
him enough to reason. ‘I won’t get an opportunity like this ever again and if
I am going to take over managing the hotel, I want to ensure I have all the
right tools and credentials. We know women are expected to prove
themselves a lot more than men.’
I had convinced my parents this course would be the end of my
academic pursuits, and my focus would then fall onto being available and
fully invested in managing the hotel while also being a good wife to their
future son-in-law. A win for everyone it seemed.
Yes, I could’ve done the course here in London, but taking time abroad
was my one way of ensuring I had more time to figure out how I felt about
marrying Rohan. Well, at least coming to terms with my parent’s decision
since their minds were set.
‘There she goes again. Savi, it is not the end of the world to become a
wife. I’ve done both and look at me,’ my mother said before dramatically
collapsing onto the chaise I’d vacated a moment ago.
