Citric stood on the parapet as dawning light began to peek over the
horizon of the Southern castle. Looking out over the city, he took in
every empty street, every thatched-roof house, before moving his gaze
beyond the city walls out across the land and further, to the tree line of the
Red Wood.
The woodland looked tranquil as it rose out of the morning mist, like a
beautiful sleeping beast.
But it was not sleeping.
No, it was wide awake like it hadn’t been in centuries. The wood stared
back at him, its senses heightened in anticipation, just like the dozens of
men from the other camps in the Red Wood who stood waiting beneath its
canopy. They had gathered at his written instruction and now stood waiting
for his signal to confirm that their ancestral lands had finally been
reclaimed.

Citric inhaled a long breath of cool morning air and committed this
heartbeat in time to memory. He had lived his whole life for this moment.
As a boy, he had seen it in his dreams so many times. His parents had
spoken of it as if it were a prophecy. His grandparents had foretold that one

the pages of history, covered up by palatable lies, but now history would be
re-written with the charred ashes of bloody truth. At the dawning of this
auspicious day, the course of the future would change forever.
Retrieving an arrow from his quiver, Citric ran the fletching goose
feathers through his calloused fingers. He wrapped a piece of soaked cloth
around the arrowhead and struck a flint on the castle wall. Setting the
arrowhead aflame, he knocked it into his longbow and raised it up to the
cloudless sky. Citric watched as it flew over the city and past the outer
castle wall, a soaring arc of hope and retribution in the dawning sky.
Brielle was born in the castle of the Southern Kingdom and had lived there
her entire life. She had walked every hall, explored every chamber, and
supervised the interior decorating of most rooms. But she had never in her
life even thought of, let alone ventured to, the dungeon. She tried to steel
her nerves as the King’s Guard—now Citric’s guards—escorted her down a
narrow, stone staircase. Down, down, and around it went, descending into
murky shadows and rotten air. She had thought fleeing her birthright to live
