Good fucking God.
Josie Harrington let out an exasperated sigh of contentment as she
popped the final piece of chocolate cupcake in her mouth. Whoever said to
mix Dr. Pepper into the recipe was a pure fucking genius, because God
almighty, these cupcakes were delicious.

They couldn’t get any better even if they tried.
And she sure as hell wasn’t bringing home second place for the second
year in a row at the Cherish County Annual Bake Off.
With tired hands, she plopped herself down on her barstool and leaned
her chair back, closing her eyes. Second place simply would not do this
year. She had to get in first place, and she could practically see the gold
medal around her neck. If she placed first, these ‘Peppercakes’ would
absolutely be the talk of the entire county for the next year or so. It was a
genius idea, really. Chocolate. Cherry cola. A match made in heaven that
was sure to be a smashing success.
Not to mention they’d be a huge boom for her business. And right now,
she desperately needed the help.
Three months late on rent.
Threats of getting the water and electricity cut off.
She sighed angrily. Ever since Babycakes had set up shop around the
corner, she’d been all but banished from everyone’s vocabulary in this
damn town. It was almost as if they’d all forgotten how amazingly delicious
her baked goods were. Even the horny men that had only been at the bakery
for her had turned tail and run away to sniff out Babycakes.
It was like the whole world was dead set against her.
Except, it wasn’t fair. Josie had worked her ass off to get to the top.
Worked her ass off—and was still working her ass off—to stay afloat. Yet,
somewhere along the way, someone had stolen the crown that had been
once hers.
And this time, she needed to take it back.
She glanced over at the clock on the stove. 4:15 PM. Another fifteen
minutes and the batch in the oven would be done and would be ready for a
little extra loving before getting boxed up to head out to the annual bake
off. Even when she wasn’t at the bakery, she was still baking. Still
dreaming. Still… fantasizing.
So, what if this was her way of coping with Steven? Throwing herself
into her work wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It was… quite productive,
really. Even if she wasn’t quite seeing those results in her bank account yet.
But, still. These things would take time
