Oliver – Eighteen Months Ago
MY MIND DRIFTED TOWARDS CONSCIOUSNESS. Movement around me rocked
my body and a groan escaped. In the background someone yelled and before
I could open my eyes to figure out what was wrong, the blackness fell over
me.

It wasn’t the last time I tried to open my eyes. I wasn’t even sure it was
the first. I’d lost count of how many times that blanket of darkness clouded
my brain.
When the haze receded one last time, I found it was easier to hold onto
consciousness. The pain in my head reminded me that an explosion had
nearly taken out my team, right after we located and secured our target.
Nothing else hurt but my limbs were heavy.
The beeping was new. The annoying sound let me know that my heart
was, in fact, beating. The lack of wind was also a good indication that I was
indoors. Antiseptic soap and that pessimistic medicine odor permeated the
air. It was safe to say that I was in a hospital. Landstuhl would be my guess.
I opened one eye. My gaze caught a fluorescent light at just the wrong
angle, and I flinched. Yep, definitely a hospital.
“Aah, you’re awake.” A familiar voice had my lips curling. Just that hint
of a smile brought a world of pain to my face, and I stopped. “Was
wondering how long you would nap for.”
Awkwardly I turned my head to face my brother, Nick. Despite his
sarcasm, he couldn’t hide the concern in his eyes.
“How long?” My voice croaked as Nick brought a glass of water with a
straw closer to my mouth.
While I sipped, he spoke. “From what little intel Tex could garner, you
walked into a rigged building a little over twenty-four hours ago. You’ve
been at Landstuhl for about thirteen.”
I moved my face away from the glass. “When did you get here?”
“Dad and I arrived this morning.” Nick put the glass back on the table.
“He’s harassing the staff, in case you’re wondering.”
Somehow, that did not surprise me. Not at all. Of the two, my dad was the
rational one. He could also be annoying when he wanted answers. Nick
would likely have tried to bully the staff into telling him what he wanted to
know. My dad was a relentless nag. He was subtle about it, if you didn’t
know what he was doing, but he would get what he wanted.
