I’VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY people call it cold feet.
Does it evoke an image of someone standing barefoot on ice, frozen in
place and unable to take the next step? Does it capture our body’s fight-orflight response when fear or stress sets in, where blood diverts from the
limbs and flows to vital organs, making it easier to throw punches or run for
our lives?

Or does it simply serve as an antithesis to hotfoot? Because let’s face it—
when we’re on the brink of a life-altering decision and don’t get that
irresistible urge to take the plunge and eagerly race toward that next step,
we’ve simply become accustomed to labeling it cold feet.
As I stand here, grappling with the zipper of the ivory organza ball gown
meant to symbolize the beginning of my happily ever after, my face
glistening with a mixture of makeup and sweat, the notion of cold feet
seems entirely inadequate to describe my current state. My feet may be sore
from not being used to wearing high heels, but they’re not cold.
In the literal sense, at least.
I’m burning up. The dress has a plunging sweetheart neckline, doesn’t
even have sleeves and shows off way too much skin. Yet I’m about to burst
into flames.
Taking a long, shaky breath, I exhale slowly to settle the butterflies in my
stomach, praying I don’t pass out from heat exhaustion.
Damn.
I need to pull my shit together.
I’m about to walk down the aisle, exchange vows and become the wife of
Neil Hiscock.
Hiscock.
Groaning at the surname, I remain unrepentant about not taking it.
If I did, my name would be Maddison Hiscock. Which, when pronounced
slowly or quickly, sounds far too similar to Mad is on his cock.
When he first told me his last name, I thought for sure he said Hitchcock,
and until I saw the wedding invitations, I thought it was. I know what
you’re thinking—how did I not know? But in my defense, he only uses his
first and middle name on social media, and his buddies always refer to him
by his middle name, which I found odd at first but never thought too much
about. So you can imagine my surprise when I read the fancy calligraphy
aloud.
Kindly join us as we celebrate the wedding of Neil Buford Hiscock and
Maddison Ruby Evans.
It didn’t take me long to learn it was not a typo. I also realized when I
pronounce his full name slowly or quickly, it sounds like kneel before his
cock.
He’s vexed I’m not taking his name, and we had a few heated arguments
over it, but ultimately, it’s my choice, not his.
Besides, I had already acquiesced to his parents’ plans for the wedding,
allowing them to arrange everything as they saw fit because I didn’t care
enough about the details—I only care about the man I’m marrying. I was
genuinely shocked when they expressed their desire to have the wedding
here, considering they hail from Wisconsin.
