Stumbling from the plane crash, I vomit whatever is left in my stomach
onto the grass. Hands rub my back, hold my hair for me, and pass me
water. I accept it all as I straighten and wipe my mouth, and when I
turn to them, I know my gaze is ice cold.
The same ice moves through my veins.

Numb.
“We need to go back to the base and search for signs of my father,
gather all the research, and destroy what is left,” I order. Louis watches me
worriedly but nods, and then I sweep my gaze over all of them. “And we
need to see to Isaac’s wound.”
“I’ll be fine,” he mutters, but he’s favouring one leg, his face is shiny
with sweat, and his eyes are pinched in pain.
“If we are going after my father, we need to be better than fine,” I snap
before I soften my voice, stopping before him. “Please, I can’t lose anyone
else. I can’t deal with anything else right now.”
He searches my gaze, those grey eyes worried, before nodding. “We’ve
got you,” he murmurs. “Are you okay?”
“Not one fucking bit, and I won’t be until my father is dead.” I grab my
gun, throw it over my shoulder, and pick my way through the plane crash,
heading back to the base.
I know they will follow.
They are worried, I sense it, but I can’t put them at ease. I can’t even
speak anymore, not without wanting to scream. I thought . . . wondered if
he was really dead, but after seeing the video and then hearing nothing from
him, I thought he truly had passed, that he was buried and I was safe.
I was so fucking wrong.
My father is alive, and not only that, he orchestrated this whole thing. I
am nothing but a puppet once more, my strings being pulled by him. He
brought me home, ensured I met the other fucked-up kids like me, then sent
me on missions to stop his partner who clearly still worked with him.
I wonder if his partner knew that was the endgame or if my father lied
to him too.
Either way, I’m done playing his games.
I’m done being an experiment.
I’m going to find him, and when I do, I’m going to kill him once and for
all. This time, there will be no doubt, no burial, just his rotting corpse at the
end of my gun. I’ll free us all, I’ll keep us safe, and I’ll do whatever it takes
because this isn’t just about me anymore.
Or about us.
This is about every single person he has experimented on. He was right,
this brought us together, but he should have realised then that he fucked up
because we won’t rest until he’s stopped. The very same super soldiers he
created will be the ones to end his life, and there is nothing he can do to
stop that.
