ARI
THE FAMILIAR OPENING jingle bells to Mariah Carey’s All I Want for
Christmas Is You tinkled through Folklore as Ari took another sip of her
Gingerbrute Winter Stout from Last Glass Ales.
She knew that her best friend Zahra had a soft spot for this song. It was
on her bookstore-coffeehouse-pub holiday playlist a record ten times for
maximum repeats.

In the last hour, it came on five times, which would make even the most
festive person grumpy. Except for Zahra, who still waltzed behind the bar
slinging pints with the widest grin on her face, the golden tinsel in her
micro braids twinkling as it caught in the light. The effect of the sparkling
gold against her dark brown skin was stunning. Zahra knew it, too. That girl
was gorgeous.
“Damn it,” Isa growled as he stalked from the shelves in the back of the
store, a couple books clutched in hand. “I’ve heard this song too many
times today!”
Zahra’s older brother, co-owner of Folklore and certifiable Scrooge,
distinctly did not have tinsel anywhere close to his person. He came to a
halt at Ari’s table, dropping the mini-tower of paperbacks there and putting
his hands on his hips.
“Hi Ari,” he said while glaring at his sister across the bar area: she was
now singing along at full volume.
“Hey Isa.” Ari smiled up at the flannel-wearing grump in front of her.
He continued to frown at his sister. “Happy Holidays?”
“Yeah, Happy Holidays and all that…but someone’s gotta rein that girl
in.”
“I do not volunteer as tribute. She takes her holiday cheer very
seriously.”
“And it seems to get more intense every year.” Isa’s frown, if possible,
deepened. “Does it have to be this song?”
“Your patrons seem to be loving it.”
Across the bar area and the bookstore section, everyone was smiling
and laughing. Some were even singing along with Mariah and Zahra. The
joy was, quite literally, palpable.
If only Ari could absorb some of it. She knew her grades were going to
be awful. Earlier in the semester, her college advisor put her on academic
probation after she missed her exam the day after the one-year anniversary
of her dad’s death. Instead of getting a good night’s sleep the night before,
she drank two bottles of red wine, took a hot bath, and passed out on the
couch. The exam was at nine AM and she slept through all ten alarms she’d
set. Her stomach swooped at the memory of waking up to the sun shining
through her living room window.
Yep, at the very least that class would be a fail. There was no way she
could redeem her grade afterward. Her professor had been immovable on
the subject.
“I recognize that one,” Ari said, flicking the spine of a T. Callaghan
book, her older brother Thomas’s most recent release.
Isa looked down at the stack, still frowning, but seemingly grateful for
the distraction from Mariah Carey.
“Thomas has been selling pretty well since he came back to Michigan
and took over at the Coney Island. Turns out folks love a local celebrity.”
Ari snorted. Celebrity.
