MONROE
The first gasp comes before my grandma and I even set foot inside the
swanky hotel ballroom.
The second gasp is quickly followed by the murmurs I’ve come to expect
when I arrive at most places.

--- --- --- --- ---
“Isn’t he that guy from that reality TV show?”
“The One?”
“Yeah, that’s the show. The one where the guys compete to win the star’s
heart. What was his name again?”
“I think it was something like Matt or Morgan or Monroe.”
“Monroe! That was it. Wasn’t he a bit of a…”
“Dick? Totally. And not just a bit of a dick. He was a huge one.”
“Poor, Rebecca. Do you think she had any idea until the end?”
“Probably not. I wonder why none of the other guys tipped her off.”
“I bet it was guy code or something like that.”
“I wonder what he’s doing here. I thought he lived somewhere like Dallas
or Denver.”
“It was definitely a city that starts with D.”
“D is for dick, I guess.”
“If the shoe fits.”
As they dissolve into a fit of giggles, I grit my teeth together. Though it’s
tempting to glare at the table of young women decked out in formalwear, I
make every effort not to let my irritation—or anxiety—show on my face.
Since appearing on a stupid reality show six months ago and being cast as the
villain, I’m used to the stares and especially the jeers.
Though I haven’t faced too many of them since relocating to Seattle, it
isn’t a huge surprise that in a room full of women, at least a few of them
would recognize me.
Nan, who already has one arm looped through mine, gives me a gentle pat
on the bicep. “Don’t mind those girls. They don’t know anything about you.”
I give the woman who has had my back since I was in Pampers an
affectionate grin. “They think they do after watching me on their TV screens
for weeks.”
Not to mention filling their social media feeds.
“Psh.” She waves off the remark. “Everyone knows those reality shows
are fake. You don’t want to waste your time on any women like that.”
Giving the women a stern look as we pass by them, we make our way
across the room toward her table.
Despite all of the negative tabloid covers and clickbait headlines, she’s
stood by me. That was a big part of why I packed my bags and moved
halfway across the country. Though she’s still as sassy as ever, she isn’t
getting any younger.
The one good thing about being on the show was that it taught me that
life is short. And fleeting. And it’s really important who you spend your time
with.
I was also looking for a fresh start in a city where people don’t know my
name or my notoriety. Well, at least where most people don’t know me.
Which begs the question: What the hell am I doing here?
I pause. “Am I crazy for participating in this auction?”
