EMILY
MY LIVING ROOM was dark and full of … well, mostly just pizza boxes
and the soft glow of my laptop screen. My friend and coworker Rachel had
the kind of concentration usually reserved for defusing bombs or, in her
case, navigating through the less explosive but equally treacherous realms
of my on-again and off-again boyfriend’s social media and beyond. “I’m
hacking into the mainframe,” she said.

--- --- --- --- ---
“Mainframe?”
“Not really. It just sounds cool,” she replied.
“Did you get in?” I whispered, leaning in with bated breath. The drama
of the moment wasn’t lost on us, with each keystroke from Rachel
amplifying the suspense. It was our own little thriller, a blend of reality and
the fantastical worlds Rachel usually conjured up in her fanfiction after
work. Except this time, the dragon we were facing was my potentially
cheating ex-boyfriend, and our sword was Rachel’s unmatched keyboard
wizardry.
With a dramatic pause that would’ve made any dungeon master jealous,
Rachel spun around with a victorious smirk. “Got it. We’re in.” Her eyes
sparkled with the thrill of the chase, and her demeanor was that of a knight
who’d just found a back door into the enemy’s castle.
Sadie, my best friend and steadfast companion in all things life and
ludicrous, was sitting beside us and watching with an amused smile. This is
it, our eyes said in silent conspiracy, ready to face the beast lurking in the
depths of Leon’s Instagram DMs.
The night was set up like a sacred ritual for any self-respecting gal and
her ride-or-die crew. But instead of finding our inner goddesses or
whatever, we were deep in the trenches, stalking my ex—who might as well
have been crowned King Douchebag of Cheatersville—on every social
media platform known to mankind.
Rachel turned to us. “Let the creepfest begin.”
Sadie, armed with an arsenal of popcorn and sarcastic commentary,
leaned in closer. “Show us the goods, Rach. Let’s see how deep the rabbit
hole goes.” Her enthusiasm was the glue that held our little operation
together.
“Look at this,” Rachel snorted, pulling up a photo of Leon posing with
what looked like his aunt’s Chihuahua, trying to radiate tough-guy vibes.
“Because nothing says I’m sensitive and caring like exploiting your aunt’s
pet for likes.”
Diving deeper into Leon’s online persona felt like exploring an
archaeological site, with each click unearthing more layers of absurdity.
“Hold up,” she said, zooming in on an image that seemed to capture Leon
in a moment of candid bliss, minus one key detail—me. “Isn’t this from our
trip to the lake? He cropped you out, Emily!”
Sadie squinted at the screen. “He didn’t just crop you out; look at his
teeth. They’re so white they could guide ships home on a foggy night. He’s
gone overboard with the editing.”
Rachel clicked on another photo, this time of Leon at the gym, flexing
in a way that screamed that he spent more time taking selfies than actually
lifting. “Ah, the classic gym selfie,” she commented, “because nothing says
I’m a catch like a public display of narcissism.”
