I hurried toward the front door of Knox’s parent’s house, Shadow’s words
ringing in my ears.
A fire at the refuge.
An attack on our pack.

--- --- --- --- ---
A ransom note demanding I trade myself for Bulldozer and Savage.
Grabbing the door, I yanked it open.
I had to get Knox so we could go back to Payne, so we could—
My thoughts and body halted abruptly when my gaze collided with
Knox’s. He stood in the doorway, his hand outstretched.
Ashley’s arms were wrapped around his neck, her teeth in his shoulder
even though he was still wearing his shirt.
White noise flooded my brain. Ginger’s cry of betrayal was a roar that
echoed in my ears.
“Get the fuck off of me,” Knox growled at Ashley, grabbing her by the
shoulders and ripping her away from his neck.
He dropped her on her ass and took a step toward me.
I stepped back, away from him.
He slammed the door shut behind him, leaving Ashley inside. Taking a
few more slow steps toward me, he held his hands out.
“You know I’ve never encouraged her,” he said in a low voice. “My mom
was trying to get me to agree to lead the pack. Ashley took things into her
own hands. Smell my breath; you’ll know I haven’t kissed her, and I sure as
hell didn’t mark her. Look at your shoulder.”
I swallowed hard.
Despite what I’d seen, I knew Knox. He hadn’t so much as looked twice at
Ashley. He was loyal to a fault.
If he’d wanted her claim when she bit him, his would have vanished from
my skin. But I trusted him, and didn’t pull down my sleeve. Or smell his
breath.
I was sure I’d remember the moment and overthink it later, but for the time
being, we had bigger problems.
“There was an attack and a fire at the refuge. The guy from the diner led it.
We need to go.” I turned toward the car, not trusting myself to not keep reseeing Ashley’s teeth in his skin.
He caught up to me and took my hand. “Carrot…”
I glanced at him as we walked. “I trust you. If you say nothing happened,
then nothing happened. But your shoulder’s bleeding, and more people are
hurting because of me, so I need to go.”
We reached the car, and Knox took the driver’s seat. He didn’t even look
at his bloody shoulder as he peeled out of the driveway.
I was still in the back seat, and had a front-row view of the way his body
was tensed. The man was eerily still, only his hands moving at all as he kept
our vehicle on the road.
