BIRCHLEIGH HALL, AUGUST 1819
“W hy not Bettencourt Hall or Bettencourt Manor? That is all I am
asking.”

--- --- --- --- ---
I hardly paid my brother Valentine’s comment any heed as, one by one, I
placed the stack of books beside me into the traveling trunk, crossing off each
title from my penciled list.
“Bettencourt Court is so … repetitive. So inelegant. It begs whether the
family will be receptive to your tutoring, Phin. I cannot think highly of the
mind of a man who would choose such a name to represent his family’s
legacy.”
My brow furrowed as I reached the end of the list, one title glaring back
at me, still uncrossed. “I doubt the Earl of Bettencourt cares much for your
opinion.” My gaze scoured the neat line of books filling the trunk in search of
the missing one. I was certain, though, I had brought the book with me from
home.
I glanced at Valentine. He stretched out in the chair beside the bed, legs
crossing leisurely in front of him while he flipped through the pages of the
precise book I was searching for.
I had stayed with my sister, Diana, and her husband, Marmaduke, for the
last two days—ever since they had sent me word of the sudden situation
Duke, as we called him, had discovered for me. Valentine and his wife,
Rebecca, had joined yesterday.
I rose from my knees, walked over, and took the book unceremoniously
from Valentine. He made no attempt to stop me, which was as I had
expected, for I had never seen a book in his hands unless it was being
wielded as a weapon.
“Is the earl not in possession of a library?” Valentine asked as I set the
book in its place and crossed it off the list. There was such satisfaction in
crossing off the final item from a list—almost as much as there was in the
way the books fit perfectly into my trunk.
“Not having been to Bettencourt Court, I couldn’t say.”
“Phineas…” Valentine’s brow cocked as he watched me in amusement.
I busied myself with closing the trunk.
When I forbore responding, he continued, “You would never take a
tutoring position at an estate without first making certain of the quality of its
library.”
I secured the latch, then went over to the bell cord next to Valentine and
gave it a firm tug. “Duke assured me it has a fine one.” My brother-in-law
had gone to no small trouble to secure the position for me. It was so ideal as
to be nearly miraculous—not that I put much stock in talk of miracles;
everything had an explanation if one had the determination to understand it.
Miracle or not, though, I could not have asked for a better situation:
