Marston is a small Hydorian village, with a tavern called The King’s
Arms. We call in on occasion to catch up on news and enjoy a beer
or two. The village sits on the outskirts of the Leaton estate. These
lands became our home a year ago after our mother met a fancy lord who
proposed to her after less than a week. We had our doubts at the start, but
Robert is a good man—the opposite of our bastard father—and I’m happy
to say he has changed our mother’s life for the better. He came to the
marriage a widower, though not alone. He has a daughter by his late wife…
a beautiful daughter who is used to her father’s undivided attention.
Beauty by name, brat by nature.

Spoiled.
There are times aplenty I want to put her over my lap and spank some
respect into her, for I consider myself her guardian now, along with my two
brothers. While the lass might be trouble, I won’t tolerate any disrespect
toward her. So, when I am in the tavern and overhear the cretinous thirdborn son of a neighboring lord mouthing off about how he’s going to bed
her—and, through her, claim her father’s estate—I see red.
The proprietor of The King’s Arms knows me and my brothers well, as
do most of the people here. Since we moved to Leaton, we have taken on
the task of looking out for the estate and the villages within it, working with
the local guardsmen to keep the lands safe. It gives us a purpose—it is our
home now, and a way of repaying the lord who has made our mother so
happy.
And so, nobody in the tavern pays any attention when I nod my head
to Aspen, my youngest brother, and he takes the mouthy lout by the arm
and ‘guides’ him out the back. Nor does it merit a sideways look when my
brother Linden and I follow and shut the door to the tavern firmly behind
us.
“What the fuck were you saying?” Aspen demands, pinning Peter, the
lordling, against the wall.
Linden cracks his knuckles in an ominous way. “Aye, something about
bedding Beauty and claiming her estate when her father goes.”
Peter flushes as he looks back and forth between us, then throws a
glance toward the closed tavern door as though hoping somebody might
come to his aid. It is dark and late, and none of his drinking companions so
much as twitched when Aspen dragged him out. As it was, I had noticed a
few of his supposed friends sending wary looks our way when Peter,
emboldened by copious ale, had become louder and more animated about
his plans.
