My first kiss was the worst kiss I have ever had. Twelve years later, that
same boy is now my best friend. I didn’t start this book club because of
him. Harrison was the cause of that. I should be thanking him since I’ve
met fantastic friends in this group.

--- --- --- --- ---
Tonight is supposed to be our biggest night yet. I planned the
whole thing, and everyone had already RSVPed. I decorated the bookstore
weeks ago, but Collin is going to go over with me tonight and help with the
food. I wasn’t sure if anyone would show up with it being Christmas Eve,
but most of us don’t spend Christmas with our families anyway.
That’s the whole reason this book club has been snowballing.
Most of us live vicariously through the characters we read about. I spend
my Christmas mornings in bed and then on the couch with a book. Collin
tried inviting me to his family’s house last year, but it didn’t feel right.
Harrison and I were having problems at the time, and spending Christmas at
another man’s house, regardless of him being just my friend, would have
made things worse for us.
Looking back on it now, I guess it wouldn’t have made that much
of a difference. Harrison broke up with me that following day. Who breaks
up with someone on Christmas? Scrouge, that’s who. Collin and I refer to
him as that from now on, so I don’t have to say his name.
I hear the horn outside my place and pull the curtains back to see
Collin pulling into the driveway. He steps out in the most festive sweater
and brown khakis. I chuckle and return to packing all the paper plates and
cutlery in my tote. Then I hear my front door open without a knock.
“You know you don’t live here, right?” I say.
“You act like you don’t do the same thing at my place,” He retorts. I
smirk and try to hide it but fail miserably.
“Exactly,” Collin says with a snarky voice.
“I don’t see your point. Come help me bring this out to your car.”
He smiles and grabs a tote.
We finish loading his car and start driving to my bookstore. It is
still crazy to think that I own my bookstore. I have a degree in history, but
after I realized that I would have to wake up every day to be in a classroom,
I decided that wasn’t the life I wanted. I love history and being able to teach
it every day seemed like a dream.
History is what led me to this path of book-loving. Every book
has a piece of history in it, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction. I wanted
everyone to be able to experience it and share their love for it. Being a
second-hand store was hard at first, but it was smooth sailing once I found
my audience.
