Detective Amyra Kahale loved the night shift. More so than her partner,
Detective Julio Lister, anyway. While he groaned as the seconds ticked by,
she buzzed at her desk, finally getting a jump on their paperwork. Amyra
filled in boxes and wrote descriptions quietly and without any complaint.
Lister’s annoyance and complaints were in his very presence, from the way
he sat to the sigh that echoed from his mouth every time he flipped a page.

She ignored him. It was easy enough to do. She just had to focus on the
work. Truth be told, they were behind. More so than anyone knew. While
they both loved solving cases, the dreaded paperwork always fell by the
wayside. Half the department was behind on their paperwork, as the captain
had so eloquently stated earlier in the week.
“I don’t know why you all find it so difficult to fill out and turn in your
paperwork on time, but get it together. From here on out, there will be
consequences.”
No one knew what those consequences were. No one had dared ask. It
was just known that it would happen even if he had to make them up as he
went along.
Lister sighed again, and Amyra rolled her eyes. “What is wrong with
you? It’s just filling things in. You’ve already done the heavy lifting. Just
fill out the report.” She turned a page, sat her pen down, and picked up her
piping hot cup of coffee.
“You think I remember what happened during this case? Once I move
on, my brain does too. Now I have to search my mind for information on a
case we worked weeks ago.”
Amyra could have taken this moment to point out that if he had done the
paperwork immediately after solving the case, he wouldn’t have a problem
now. She swallowed her retort. He was already annoyed, and now was not
the time to pile it on. Amyra and Julio had been partners for years and
years. In fact, their tenth anniversary was coming up. They had been
partners longer than they’d been with their respective spouses. It was sad
when she thought about it, so she tried not to.
She shook her head. It always amazed her how he could move from case
to case without any lingering effects. Without the ghost, as her mother
called it. Her mother, Sergeant Victoria Kahale, had once been a force of
nature within the Honolulu Police Department. She accrued the highest case
closure rate in the state during her twenty years as a detective. She was a
legend. A marvel. She had told Amyra that there were cases you could
move past quickly, but then there were others.
“Some linger. Like ghosts, they attach themselves to you. Hard to shake.
You have to find a place to put them. Lock them away inside yourself so
you can focus on the work at hand.”
