Olivia clenched and unclenched her bruised hand as she and Evelyn walked to
the wall. Nothing was broken, but it was going to be a pain and a half to write
anything for a while.

--- --- --- --- ---
She hadn’t planned on punching anyone today. But then a strange woman
—probably a little drunk—had tugged on her silver hair while she and her
sister walked by, and it had just sort of . . . happened.
e woman’s nose had already been crooked; it wasn’t like Olivia had made
it worse.
“I still think we should let Mom see it,” Evelyn said, eyeing her hand. “Just
in case.”
Olivia shook her head, wiggling her ngers to show that nothing was
broken.
Evelyn’s mouth scrunched (Disappointment? Frustration? Delayed nasty
aftertaste from breakfast?), but she didn’t argue further.
Placed at the very top of a hill in the middle of the forest, Citadel was a
walled city that housed just over twenty thousand people, the world’s entire
human population. Most of the buildings were made from wood, but the
wealthiest homes were made of stone. e perimeter wall itself was made of a
combination of wood, scrap, and crumbling cement, the outer layer routinely
xed with waterproof materials such as animal skins and rough rubber.
ey reached the bottom of the wall and had to wait in line to climb the
stairs. e number of people jostling and bumping into Olivia set her teeth on
edge, even through her thick sweater. She forced herself to stay still. It’d be over
soon.
It’d be easier if Elias was here. He’d tuck me into his side to keep me from
touching at least half as many strangers.
“Are you all right?” Evelyn asked. If she weren’t standing right next to
Olivia, she’d be hard to nd in the crowd. Everyone wore thick, dark clothing
to combat the constant chill that hung over Citadel like an obsessive ex-lover,
even in the summer.
Most people, and almost all the women, also wore some
sort of head covering—caps, scarves, hoods—some of them for additional
warmth, some for the sake of modesty. Evelyn always kept her thick, dark curls
tucked into a headscarf whenever going out, spending extra money on the ones
dyed brighter colors. When she opened the drawer she kept them in, it was like
discovering a rainbow. But today she wore black.
Olivia shrugged, keeping her hands in the pouch of her sweater around one
of her smaller sketchbooks. ere was a bad feeling in her belly, like her guts
had been lled with melted iron that was rapidly hardening. Nothing new
there. It’d go away once this was over.
