MADDOX
Your nine o’clock is here,” Lindsay said when I walked into the
office. My secretary’s yellow cardigan was in stark contrast to the
black décor I had going.
She pinched the corners of her mouth, but she didn’t comment on the fact
that I was late.

Good. It wouldn’t change anything; it would just piss me off. Everyone
knew that pissing me off was a bad way to start the day.
“She’s already in your office.”
I glared at Lindsay.
She turned her attention to whatever she was doing. She wasn’t as
terrified of me as she’d been when I’d first hired her. It grated on me—I liked
to rule by fear. If she didn’t know as much as she did, I would have gotten rid
of her and started over. She was loyal, though, and loyalty meant more to me
than fear.
I adjusted the collar on my designer button-down shirt and opened the
door to my office.
“Miss Evans,” I said.
Raven Evans turned to face me, and I fell into her eyes. Fuck me, I’d
never seen eyes like those—the color of ice, reeling me in.
“Mr. Lee.”
I looked her up and down. She was gorgeous. Black hair tumbled over
her shoulders in loose curls, her lips pouted a little, and she had curves for
days with a pair of tits that would make any man sit up and beg.
Even if she wore dark jeans and a floral top that left way too much to the
imagination.
When I took a step closer, I held out my hand. She took it. Her shake was
firm, her hands soft.
And I felt nothing—no jolt of magic, no power play.
“You’re human,” I said.
She nodded. “Is that a problem?”
“I usually only hire my kind.”
She raised her eyebrows. “That seems discriminating.” I still held onto
her. I didn’t want to let go, and apparently, neither did she.
“I can’t have people with no power in a world where I need it,” I said.
“What makes you think you can do better than the assistants I’ve had
before?”
“They haven’t worked out very well for you, have they?” she challenged.
She wasn’t wrong. I’d gone through a slew of assistants, each as
incapable as the next.
As a demon in charge of the city, I preferred having other demons or
sprites work for me, rather than roping in humans. Humans were weak
creatures, easily swayed, and they gave into their whims without thinking
twice.
I needed more than that.
Just before I let go of her, warmth flowed through me. It wasn’t magic,
that much was sure. I flashed on a male I’d fucked up a few days ago, his
face bloodied, his cries for mercy I hadn’t wanted to give. I pang of guilt shot
into my chest.
I let go of her hand without yanking it back. I commended myself for my
restraint.
What the fuck had that been? I never felt guilty about anything I did—
that male had deserved it, too, beating on a woman.
She’d made me feel bad about something. Whatever it was about Raven
