“Twenty-six years of service flushed down the drain.” Ragheed
banged his head into his hands and scratched his buzzcut scalp—a
familiar tell of his turmoil.
One. Two. I examined each cream ceramic floor tile from the office door
to the window with each stride of my legs. Thirteen. “Don’t be dramatic.
It’s going to be fine.” Fifteen. I turned on my heel and echoed my steps.
One. I noted the gray specks of glitter that sparkled against the cream
surface of the tiles, each pattern identical. Four.
“Asher.”
I glanced up from my inspection of the floor and met his exasperated
stare. He pinned me with a “fuck you” glare and rolled his eyes.
“You’re scared too, or you wouldn’t be in a one-man parade.”
I had a tell of my own. Pacing. In my mind, I was able to move stalled
time with the forceful stride of my legs. Six. Seven. The porcelain clanged
with each step beneath my combat boots. Every footfall reverberated
through my entire body and kept time with the thump of my heart. “I have
to believe it’s going to be fine.”
“It’s Jones’s word against ours,” Ragheed said.
“Akhi, it’s cool. We’ll explain what happened. The lieutenant commander
will understand,” I said.
My phone vibrated in my hand and the letters HOME appeared on the
screen just as the office door opened. Since I’d enlisted in the Navy and
moved to San Diego, my parents’ phone calls were always both persistent
and at the wrong time. With a sigh, I silenced the ring and stuffed my phone
into my pocket.
Ragheed and I stood at attention. It took every ounce of my self-control
not to grab the sorry excuse of a human, Jones, and slam him into a wall.
He flashed me a smug smile before he sauntered down the hallway toward
the elevator.
“Senior Chief George, Senior Chief Jarbo. At ease.” Lieutenant
Commander Martin was the kind of man who radiated power and authority.
He was built like a brick house, had beady blue eyes and a hooked nose that
flared with his no-bullshit attitude, but during sea and shore duty under his
command, I quickly learned he was a man of utmost integrity.
“Have a seat, Charming, Peter Pan.”
Martin had been a petty officer when I started my naval career, and he had
been the one who’d given us the nicknames that had followed us throughout
our careers. He had known Ragheed and me for a long time and should
realize this allegation was bogus. I hoped the years we’d served with him
were enough for him to see through Jones’s lies.
Electricity pumped through me as I wandered about the office, my eyes
fixed on a photo of my sea duty in 1997. Martin was in the center
surrounded by Ragheed, Kal, Bash, and a few other seamen who had started
out with us that year. We’d studied our asses off and underwent critical
specialized training to become Electronics Technicians in the Nuclear
Power Field. We’d built a career just to have it possibly taken away and
tainted by a jaded prick out to salvage his pride. I just couldn’t let that
happen.
